Hi again fellas, I have been absent for quite some time, did you guys miss me? Laughing I am trying to work up a load for my original 1898 Krag rifle using 220grn Sierra RN bullets. I have done some searching and can't seem to find the results I would like to see. Do any of you load your 30-40s with 220grn bullets? I am going to use the old Krag in our next sillouette match. Here is the rifle.

The bore is in great shape so it should shoot well.

Hodgdon calls out 40 - 42 grains of H-4350 for the 220 grain
-------------------- 30 - 33 grains of either H-335 or H-322 for the 220 grain
All loads are right around 1950 - 1975 fps with max loads.

What kind of performance are you looking for?

very nice looking rifle. my sierra manual is no use for this cartridge.
winchester 10th edition wee load book has 40.5grns of 760 behind the 220grn for 2070 fps and 36000 cup pressure.

Thanks guys, that's better info than I could come up with. I read that the rifle was designed to shoot 220s, thats why I bought such heavy bullets. I'll let you know how it shoots.

You're on the right track with your bullet weights. Omni's info should be of real value to you but, as I'm sure you are aware, powder formulations have changed a great deal since 1967 and you should work your loads up carefully to compensate for any changes. Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress. Nice to see that the old-timers still generate intirest.

That is a gorgeous rifle. Is the striker a special type? I remember a little bigger knob on the K-J?

GUTS, don't know it's allowed to put this here, I even didn't search for your caliber, but at the first looks I had in this old book I got very interested and I just want to share this info. It's that old that I think all copyrights are gone. If not and when it's not allowed here, just remove it (but maybe you better copy the link first Smile )

Nice find Aloysius, looking up the load for the 30-40 krag is pretty darn close to the Lyman data I posted above. I also went to the home page and they have quite a few older manuals for download in pdf file.

That's a great link, Thanks. I have been working too much to make the loads but I will have a few days in a couple of weeks to do it. I will let you guys know how they shoot. The cocking piece is called a "headless" cocking piece, they were mainly used on the later carbines.

Back when I was an infantryman, wow, there was an old E-7 that had a set of brass w crossed Krag's on them. I used to lust after them, so much so that he said if he bit it I could have them. He retired, Dang it.
