Two weeks ago I bought a 25 lb. bag of #6 shot for $28.00. Today the price is $33.00 a bag. Oh well. Take care...

I shop in the same gun shop as Joe and those are chilled shot prices. The good news is they have a lot of it in various sizes. All the best...

Just got a free bag of regular shot,25#, 7.5. Freinds dad had it in the garage! Good for trap I guess.
Gonna use chilled for hunting loads.

Stovepipe, why? The smaller the shot size, the harder the lead + the better chokeperformances. Just look at a number 4 or 5 shot, the balls are all dented in the fillingstation. A number 6 or higher has more Sb and remains round. And the trick for a shot at bigger distances is to get the shot out of your barrel as round as possible...
In the past I've been hunting small game for more than 2 years only with home-made cartridges containing number 8.5 shot.
Now lead shot is here forbitten and with steel shot it is quite another story.
(but steel seems to be OK for claypigeons because it's faster and the same shotweight contains more pellets)

Just a question to attrack your attention: have you ever tried to produce your own shot? I read an intresting article about this on the SA-forum but it's in south-african-language. It's a simple method using little equipment. When you're interested I will try to translate the headlines in english.

Lead shot: chilled and plated pattern "better" due to less deformity as it is harder, for a given speed. Speed has a lot to do with pattern as well. Either will work. For hunt loads if I'm going to reload I'll try both of course and test for best pattern.

I didnt word my post right, it sounded like soft shot was not "good enoUgh" for hunt loads when it is more than fine.

Thankfully I can still use lead for upland out here.

is your plated shot still round? When you roll it over a flat surface, does it stop at once in a dent or does it stay on rolling, not ending in a steady position?
Maybe you have better quality over there, because here I didn't like copper nor nickel plated. the core was too soft and the shot was all dented, not round at all.

I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time and was given 120kg of lead shot...BB, #4, #6, #7.5 and #9.

I gave away maybe half of it to my shooting buddy and kept the rest for Trap (#7.5) and Skeet (#9). I have been using the rest for hunting loads without any problems...well none that I can identify. The critters all fall over bleeding, so unless they faint and scratch themselves on the way down, the shot is doing its job ok.

Oh yeah, I also "scored" 5000 CCI shotshell primers and a few hundred CCI Magnum shotshell primers. Might get to use them all one day.

Cheers, Vince
