If it is for life and death situation, a satelite phone is definitely a great idea.

You could buy one for less than US$300 and get on a $39/month plan with 14c / minute call cost with Global Star. (covers ALL Americas land, Europe, Australia, Russia, Japan, but left out China, Africa and the oceans)

Or, you can get the Iridium that have whole globe coverage with higher fees..

You'll end up with more reliable services for a lot less cost in the case of emergency.
The communication is a lot clearer, two way duplex and useful even if it is not in life/death emergency.

Another idea is the SPOT locators that are becoming incredible popular with the snowmobile crowd.

I believe you pre-program it to send 1 of 3 messages to a specified phone number. One would be an emergency "We need help ASAP!", one could be "We are ok but will be late" and another is just a "We are fine, just checking in". All messages send the GPS coords of the locator to the destination so its easy to find someone in trouble.

Ideal? Nah I'd rather have a sat phone... but it is a cheaper solution.
