Hey Guys Very Happy

The rifle that is giving me fits is a solid wood stock, the Savage has a synthetic stock and there is no trouble, but I can also get a dollar bill between the stock and barrel on the Savage. Confused

Les, I would take the stock off the Rem. and sand out the barrel channel until you have clearance. Then maybe adjust that Rem Trigger down to about 3 lbs. of pull..

One of the reason synthetic stocks became so popular was due to their ability to resist humidity changes.
It is also cheaper in most cases for the factory to put plastic on and charge more money for the “in thing’’. Mad

Also keep in mind, wood stocks that are highly figured are more likely to be affected with a weather change. The straighter grained and boring looking stocks are less likely to be affected.

chambered221,

I am planning relieving the stock contact and refinishing the barrel, I would prefer to use some type of oil that can be rubbed to a high lustre any suggestions?

After you get the barrel channel how you want it, seal it with varnish or something so moisture won't soak into the wood.

Les, I’m of the believe that all wood stocks will swell and contract with or without sealing them. Sealing them just helps control it to a degree.
(I’m not saying you don’t need to seal it, you do)

Some are better than others at sealing though.

So my answer would be what ever type of finish you like !!!

Oil finishes look the best to me but aren’t the best for sealing.
This type of finish can be helped by coating with furniture polish and other such products on a regular basis.

Cooper rifles tell their customers to use T/C bore butter on their oil finished stocks. It’s amazing the sheen you can get with it !!!

When I said seal it with varnish I met the inside , (barrel Channel) of the fore arm.

Stain it to the color you want and then use multiple coats of hand rubbed boiled linseed oil. It will swell the wood slightly as it goes into it and make the stock heavier but it also stablizes the wood more than anything else I know of. (other than poly-urathane which always looks like plastic to me.)

Vince are you there, hello Vince. Laughing

Oh well.

One of the things Vince suggested was that I make sure that all the screws, and or bolts were torqued correctly.

Well I finally came up with an owners manual and it does not provide torque for anything.

Does anyone know where can I get this type of information?

I believe in doing things once, but doing them right the first time, so I don't have to do it again. Confused

Always fully tighten the bolt at the wrist (pistol grip) last and loosen it first. This is so if there is any movement or strain between the action and the stock, it won't center at the thinnest part of the stock.
65 inch pounds. Unless you have a plastic trigger guard, then 25-30 inch pounds.
