As you know, I'm a US "War of Secession" buff. Back in the mid-80s I learned that I had at least one direct ancestor in the war. With a little research I found parts of his record, including where he was buried.

Time and circumstances prevented me from visiting his grave until this past week. My brother and I, along with his son and one of my nieces, were finally able to make the trip. I was very moved when we found him. I wonder what Ira thought when his great-great-grandsons paid him a visit.

While there we found another Hines grave, same company/unit, who died the day after Ira. Brother? Cousin? The search continues...

excellent.
In a way, I am envious since my family does not have records past my grandfather.
For once, they have to change our surname once they move to Indonesia from China, and being on the grey side of the law, there is not much written material left for us either.

Pkslinger, good to see you made the journey. That gravestone is in great condition for 150+ years old.

My grandmother passed down a story where two uncles who were brothers died on the same day, in the same battle, within sight of each other. One was in the Union army, the other in the Confederate forces.

I'll have to investigate that further.
