a chap I see at work 5 -10 times every week and have got to know pretty well over last 18mths is in hospital in a bad way....
he did what thousands of us have done thousands of times and it turned to custard big time and nearly killed him..dealing with stacked bulk bags 1000kgs /1 ton three high..bottom one leaking fertilizer so he went to shove some stretchwrap in the hole (we think this happened)the bags toppled and squashed him...lucky for him he is a skinny wee weed of a chap,the bags pinned him but he had enough brains/balls/life left to make phone call to mate in smoko room who bolted out and managed to keepa calm head,they got forklifts and cleared bags off him,the skinny bit worked in his favour as the tiny space was enough for him to sort of breath....smashed up really badly ,found out today shoulder dislocated,femur smashed up...8 breaks etc,parts non salvagable,he's less than 40 with young kids and will be lucky to walk again.
its really playing on my mind big time as I was sole charge storeman and dealt with similar situations hundreds of times on my own.... there but for the grace of God go I comes to mind.

please guys look after yourselves and dont take the risks we all do without thinking about the "what ifs"


5 minutes later and this chap wouldve been dead,femur smashed up like that and femorial artlery right there.......

Damn mate...that is real scary. As Azar said...luckily there was so one nearby to assist. He’s a very lucky guy. Hopefully the Company will have insurance and both him and his family will be looked after.

Might be time for the Company to revisit the storage of these bags and do a risk assessment and look at an alternative method of stacking them.

you can be sure a full investigation will follow....way back when I was sole charge storman I had 5-600 of them stacked around bays in building and used to do all sorts of stuff around them...it makes a fella think/ponder a bit I tell you.
