Thats the issue Paul, we dont have rights we have revokable permissions.
The government has a disarmament agenda as do the media and the great ignorant unwashed. They seem to think a firearm ban will suddenly fix the human condition of robbing and killing one another. More likely however they only want the government to have guns.
The out cry for stricter gun laws started again during the Lindt cafe hostage drama where a muslim wannabe terrorist out on bail for the murder of his wife and the sexual assult of a dozen women took 20 or so people hostage with a pump action sawn off shotgun. Now he didnt have a gun license, the pump action is a restricted firearm which sort of proved the existing firearm laws were ignored, as was assult, kid napping, murder and causing fear in a public place. The fix? More laws of course, after all criminals have to follow them too.
They keep up the mantra we "Dont want to go down the American road" in respect to guns and keep to the knibbled to death by ducks approach one new ban or law at a time.
The antis make a great deal out of any gun related crime, and the fact that we havent had a mass shooting since they banned semi auto anything, and pump action shotguns. My answer is neither has New Zealand who have acces to pumps, semi autos etc. They would get better use of our money enforcing the laws we already have and improving the mental health services
and putting a lid on illegal drugs and the crimes they promote.

The problem with Australia is that the legislation dated back to the colonial days where most of the population are convicts and thus have no rights.
It is outdated but the government conveniently hold on to that power.

The idea of comparing the U.S. with Australia is around 300 million. The U.S. having over 320 million people and Australia having 24 million. 2015 census.

You can use the Magna Carta and several British bills of rights from the past. You have those rights - they are not privileges but rights that have been recognized before and are just as necessary today as when they were recognized many times in the past.

Use your British history against them.
