I think all that went out just after WW1.
After that it was knife him in the back before he sees you.
These days its he who fires first, preferably from beyond the horizon wins.

In 2005 we sent a prototype to Iraq. The first day it was flown in through a window to deliver ammo and medical supplies to some troops who were pinned down in a building. It was launched and flown by a crew in a Navy Herc.

They may have been even more pleased to see the air support that followed shortly after. Just amazing what an A-10 can do.
