Lets see, 10.8 million ftlbs at the muzzle... Bet that would stop a deer in its tracks... Wink

23lb boolit....hmmm...three in the magazine...one in the chamber...wonder how heavy the rifle is...not something I would be keen to carry in the field.

The energy required to propel a projectile at that speed is beyond my comprehension. That is totally awesome. One question though...if there is no propellant other than electrical energy...where does all the smoke come from and why? Still, quite a milestone in their development of the rail gun.

Cheers, Vince

Vince, when you pass that much current through something it produces a tremendous amount of heat. Tends to vaporize things, like the "gun" itself sometimes. Look up "arc flash" >> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arc_flash

That's why I have to wear a special uniform at work.

Hmmm, my power bill is already high enough. Looks like this baby could be alittle expensive to shoot. Cool

Pretty interesting bullet, also! Wonder why that shape?

Bushy, I work with industrial machine controls. Controllers, sensors, actuators, motors, hydraulics, pneumatics, etc. The current buzz word is "mechatronics". A blend of electrical and mechanical stuff. The arc flash uniform is because we're working on up to 600 volt systems. Occasionally we have to wear something like this >> www.labsafety.com/SALI...CID=9PP001

Slim, that shape fits in the rails they are using now. They're just testing the concept of the rail gun itself. The final actual projectile would have to be a lot more streamlined to do what they hope to do with it.

O K...So why didn't you say you were a "electromechanical engineer"...

Laughing Some of us "sparkies" have been wearing that stuff for years! Now they have an even more restrictive line of clothes-blast suits that would make the bomb squads envious -for working on 13kv and higher.
You're right-vista sucks!

I'll stick with control wiring and PLC's... (no thanks on 13K) not even crazy about hydraulics ... (had a hose break and hit me once). I prefer to stay around 120vac.. (where I work it's floating ground... I usually get hit with 60) lol just feels like someone pinched me.

Bushy, I'm not an engineer, just a technician. Or, as I told one rather pompous management type, "I'm just a peon. However, I am the peon that makes this s__t work!"

Yote, TRBL, that arc flash clothing sure is HOT, isn't it! Especially in a plant that isn't air conditioned. I think the highest voltage we have in the plant is 3200 V. We do have some much higher voltages but they are low current stuff. Corona treaters for the paper/film/foil going into printing presses.

Boy, we wandered off subject on this thread, huh! Wink

LOL heck yeah it's hot... I work in a auto paint plant... the cars warm the area up between coats...coming out of the -e-coat oven, the sealer oven, prime oven, the topcoat... then I'm in these %$@#% long sleeve shirts that are thicker 'n (L) lol There's 13Kv in my plant, but I don't have to mess with it... the high end I have to fool with is 480vac.... still according to the new OSHA regs it's all High Volatage.... I'd rather take a 2x4 from a buddy! .... What was the topic again?
