Pumpkin, If you really want to.....put some lead pistol bullets in a sabot!!!

I’ve done this in the past when I’ve just wanted to shoot the front stuffer just to shoot it.

Oops!!! wtf I just gave 2 cents didn’t I???

Chambered, yep!! That's worth at least 2 cents! I've tried sabots and they did OK. My problem is that I have a .50 caliber smoke pole and want to shoot a .50 caliber bullet.

Oh, another note on cast bullets... Hard cast Minie balls DON'T WORK! I bought some once, not realizing how hard they were. Those groups were also measured in feet. The skirt was so hard that it wouldn't expand to engage the rifling so the bullet just slid down the bore and tumbled on exit. I am going to try paper-patching them some time and see what happens.

Very Happy I got my bullets today!!!!!! They are nice I am surprised at the quality. I ordered them from Dardas. I found powder today and I just got a call from the gun shop that they got small and large pistol primers in. We are in great shape. Very Happy

You could try wrapping them in a copper jacket...

The smoke is from your lube. If the lube is burning then it isn't doing the best job in keeping the bore protected.

Ok that makes sense. Now how do I solve it? Do I have to relube all the bullets by hand?

OK Wiersay...you could always send your missus to the beauty parlour, then while she's out stick your boolits on a tray in the oven and melt the old lube off'n them....don't tell her I told ya ta do it though. Hiding

Once "clean" use one of the spray on boolit lubes...a quality one would be the order of the day. I haven't actually used any so I can't suggest a brand, but I know there are many here that have used them at one time or another, so c'mon guys...out with it...which are the better brands to utilise?

Cheers, Vince

Wiersy:
I had some oooold cast bullets from a commercial caster, and the lube allowed leading, and it smoked, too. Shocked

Just to see, I relubed a bunch with Lee Liquid Alox thinned about 25% with mineral spirits, and let them dry. It it seems to have solved the leading, and there doesn't seem to be as much smoke. YMMV.

Some smoke you just can't avoid: fer instance; "smokeless" powder IS...compared to the old black powder loads the classic cartridges were designed for....44 Special, or .44 Russian, and .38 Special, but it does smoke a little, and there is no way around it. Some things, you just have to allow for.

Look at a site called LSstuff.com. He sells bullet lubes at reasonable prices, and also a product similar to the Lee Alox, altho he has been warned by Lee's tame attorneys, so he labels it Xlox. About 1/2 the price of the Lee cocoction.

I just mixed up a half-pound of goo called Speed Green, because I could, and my next casting session, am going to try it as a pan lube. Cool

Vince: Spray-on bullet lube? Never even heard of such. Where might one find the product? What is the brand name?

Lyman has spray on lubes. The moly lube sprays on nicely -- and you can see it!

One source is MidwayUSA: www.midwayusa.com/view...ber=412198

as some of you know, I had ordered a mold for casting 45 cal acp.
I finaly got one order in after 6 months of waiting.

I used Lee Liquid Alox lube. I put some in a heavy duty plastic sandwich bag then put a few lead cast bullets in it and shook it around till they was all coated very well evenly. I then dumped them out and stood them up right and let them sit over night.
Loaded about 30 or 40 rounds up and shot them.
I seen no smoke and there was no leading.

the lead I used was straight wheel weights with no additive for hardness.
when I got home and cleaned the gun, I seen no build up and and no leading. the cloth pads came out clean.
but this is for a colt 45 acp 1911. and and loading with medium powder loads.

maybe I need to shoot around a 100 rounds to see any leading ?

Ripper,
No, you should not see any leading with well lubed bullets cast from straight wheel weights in moderate loads from a 45 ACP, as long as your bullets are not undersized. Gas blow by is the primary culprit in leading, contributed to by several other factors. 30 rounds is plenty to tell if you have a problem. Go shoot and have fun.
Best,
Ed
