While at my local gun dealer yesterday, I happened to spot a lever action Marlin 336RC in .35 Rem. with a price tag that read $199. Well that sounded like a deal to me so I went over and picked it up and found that it had six inches of the stock's finish wiped out by water damage. Everything else looked good on the rifle not a spot of rust and the blueing in good shape so I took it home. Once home I checked the date of manufacture and found that I had a rifle made in 1957. I took it all apart, cleaned it up, stripped and refinished the stock using Tru-oil. I also added a Pachmayr recoil pad and an old Leupold 3X fixed power scope. Here are a few before and after photos.

Nice gun Don. Your finished product looks a lot like my 336RC in .35 Remington since I re blued mine cause 1/3 of the bluing was worn. Only mine was made in 1952 but the receiver is not drilled for a scope mount so I installed a Lyman Receiver Site. Have fun shooting it, I really enjoy mine.

I've killed deer with a lever .35 Remington.
You got a great buy for a great gun.

Congratulations.

Thanks for the kind words guys!
The dealer I bought this from had just gotten in a 336 in 30-30. It looked as if someone had taken a hatchet to the butt stock to add a recoil pad. I checked the serial number beginning with an "E" and it is an original from the first year they were made. He didn't have a price on it yet, but I'm thinking I might go back for that one.

My guess is it's an old Leupold 3X, that's my guess cuz that's what he said in his post.

Nice job...looks much better than the original finish. The old .35 is still a good thumper with life left in it.

That's an old fixed power Leupold M8-3X. I don't think they even make a 3X anymore.

I took the 336 to the range today and despite the rain I still got some shots in. This photo shows three shots using Federal 200gr. .35 Remington factory ammunition. I have reloading dies on order, but had to buy a box to try it out. The group is from 50 yards and measures 5/8". I was using a 3X scope on the rifle.

I finally got around to checking on some handloads. I used 200gr. Sierra bullets over 39.6gr. of Varget. I shot it at 50 yards to test the load and here's the results. I plan to take this rifle on a Tennessee hog hunt in February.

Can't argue with that group! Let us know how it works on hogs.

35s are just top notch hog rollers or deer stompers. That is one dead paper plate!
That big 200 bullet is just a real joy.
Best,
Ed
