Hey everyone...

Okay so here it is... I am now looking to start hunting Whitetail here in South Carolina and a lot of the land here is large enough for me to finally be able to invest in a Bolt Action Rifle. I am a left handed shooter and I need to find a decent Rifle to use. I would go with a Right handed but why do that to myself? I am lefthanded, I should have a left handed rifle.

I have narrowed my search down to three calibers The .300, .308, and the 7mm mag. I don't want to really spend no more than $500.00.

Can anyone help me by suggesting a really good Rifle that fits my needs. I already know about the Salvage but who else makes them. Thanks in advance.

Take a look at the Browning BLR Model 81 .308 lever before you buy.
It is one heck of a rifle.

Welcome to the forum.
Lots of knowledge with great folks around here.

Don't forget Ruger and Browning have a selection left handed rifles as well. It is unfortunate that being a southpaw forces the gun makers to desciminate against. But you don't see the ACLU or Jesse Jackson taking up our cause. Perculiar.

Remington made a mod.788 in 308 if you could find one at a gunshop or on-line. The 788 is a fine rifle and should be able to find one in your price range.

Thanks for the info everyone.

Went to the local Gun Range and Shop today to test out a couple of Pistols I am in the market to buy as well. Talked to the guy there and he seemed like I was an idiot for even asking for a left handed bolt action rifle. I spent to long in the Marine Corps having to deal with Right handed firearms, now it is time to buy a few that fit me.

Thanks again ya'll

THAT is the reason that particular range/shop won't be around in the future...

Are single shots out of the question?

Savage is a good choice. IMO. spend less on the rifle and more on the scope.

Hunterjoe21 offers a good point...most single shots like Ruger #1s and the Thompson Center rifles don't discriminate...their stocks work for either side. It is a terrible shame that the manufacturers always seem to want a premium for left-handed rifles. I know that it costs a bit more to tool-up for these, but it can't cost that much. My son is right-handed but his left eye is his master eye, meaning that he is forced to shoot rifles left-handed. He went through the same problems as you before he finally decided that old Dad wasn't completely a fool and settled on the Ruger #1s.

As to cartridge, it is very hard to go wrong with he .308 in any rifle. I have never seen one that couldn't be made to shoot well...and most did right out of the box anyway.

Good luck in your quest and keep us posted.

A single shot is not out of the question but with my previous military background I very partial to bolt action. I have shot many bolt action rifles before that are right handed and have shot very well with them. The accuracy I have with a bolt action gun is too great to give up for another type of gun that I have really never shot.

Jack,

Not the type of firearm your looking for, as they are semi-automatic and will set you back alittle more then 500$ if buying used, but you know the M1A (ejects the ammo foward to the 2 o'clock position) and the AR-10 (with brass deflector) will work for a left handed shooter and both are chambered in 308Win/7.62mm NATO. Smile

Had to mention it as I prefer semi-automatic rifles. Very Happy

Dimitri
