The local gun shop is selling IMR powders for $19.95 a pound. A 25-lb, bag of shot was $32.00, but it will be going up on the next delivery. The shop cost will be $35.00, so I guess it will cost me $40.00 a bag. Take care...

Joe,
I shoot Sporting Clays with a group of guys. We have put together a buying group for our shells, powder, shot and other needs. You might look into shooting with a group and see if anyone is interested in putting together a buying group. Our last purchase was at 10% off the retail online price with free shipping. One of our guys took delivery at his home in a neighboring state where no tax is applicable, which saved us 6% also.

Everyone watches sales on shells and if we catch a sale, we order several hunderd cases. Our shell price was just under $39.60, shot was about $28 and powder, I did not order so do not know.

Out here in Australia it doesn't really pay to reload shot shells, well for shooting Clays. The cost of buying factory loads is pretty much the same as buying the reloading components.

I was pretty lucky, and in the right place at the right time, I was given....yep, GIVEN....5000 Remington Shot Shell primers, about 200 lb of shot (BB, #4, #7.5, #9 and SG) of various brands, also about 500 once fired gold Winchester hulls. The only thing I have had to buy is powder and wads. The powder I bought is a Spanish brand used in RIO factory loads...PSB 1....and from memory 4 kg (8.8 lb) cost about AUD$60.

I cast my own Lee Key Drive 1 oz slugs using lead and alloy I bought many years ago for casting pistol bullets.

All in all, it works out kinda cheap for me......until I run out of components anyway.

Cheers, Vince

Vince, here in the US the same is true. At less than $4 per box, I would not touch a 12 or 20. But when you get off the beaten path and into the 28s and 410s it is a whole new ball game. 28s are at least half again more and 410 can easily be double the price of 12ga target shells. So if you shoot a 28 and 410 it pays to reload at least in our area. Smile

$30.00 for shot, $18.00 lb for powder, $22.50 per 1000 for primers and I have 2 or 3 thousand AA WW 12 & 20 gauge hulls. I use Unique powder in my shot gun loads for hunting and red dot in the target loads.

Joe,,
I am paying about the same as the prices you quoted. Sometimes I luck out and get a deal when someone trades in their reloading equipment and supplies. All the best...

Hey Joe,

$30.00-$32.00 seams to be the norm in my area for a bag of shot these days.
Swampfox has the right idea about getting a group of shooters together and having a large order. The skeet club I belong to does this for all the members. We would put a order together when ever they would order clay targets for the club.
You can save even more money by getting 8lb or 16lb kegs of powder. The same holds true with wads and primers. They usually get a price break at 5,000. To get a break on shot you'll need to order it by the ton.[80 bags to a ton of shot] sounds like alot, but if you shoot like I did, 200 +rounds a week it goes fast.

The spot price on a pound of lead is currently $34.35; we sell 25lb bags of shot for $37.99 and everytime we buy anew the cost is normally above our previous selling price. Powder averages $19.95 for most IMRs, howevers, some powders remain in the $17 range. Primers typically are $21.95M. Factory ammo prices have increased, however, not as much as the price of copper and lead. In fact, compared to the price of standard ammo in 1968, adjusted for the cost of living, factory ammo is still about 18% cheaper.

That said, there are some real bargains with standard Federal rifle ammo.
06 is $17.99, 30-30 is $14.99 and 308 is $16.99. These prices are possible to dealers that order in significant quantity.

Some Weatherby ammo tops $125 a box. The least expensive we carry is $56.99! Be glad you don't have to buy 500 Nitro @ $14 per round!!

The biggest price increase is brass, a whopping 125% over this time last year.

Two more price increased on components, ammo and powder are expected prior to the end of the year. Buy now.

Someone on this list mentioned they were having trouble purchasing primers. Are any of you experiencing the same problem? I can still buy primers from both Cabelas and Sportsman's warehouse. They have most brands in stock. Sportsman's Warehouse has the 4 major brands in stock and Cabelas had 3 of the 4 major brands in stock. I haven't been over to Handloader's place of business but I suspect they also have stock. If there is a shortage, I am not seeing it here in Phoenix, AZ. Perhaps the shortage is geographical. Only some parts of the country are experiencing it? dunno.
