Well, I have to thank you gentlemen for the education I've received here. I got 11 out of 15 right on that quiz, and seeing as how I've never loaded a cartridge in all my born days, I'd say that's not too bad. Not as good as my two main teachers here, but not bad. I'd have to put down my success to what I've learned just reading you fellas posts.

I got three wrong. The one about overbore(I think most people get confused on that) And the "full Patch" I was thinking Fully Jacketed, and the .35 Whelen.

I missed one, the question about reduced charges of slow burning powder causing pressure spikes. This is a theory that has never been duplicated in lab testing and was prominently taught in the 60s and 70s. Secondary pressure excursions, from my reading and personal experimentation, have never caused explosive results. From what I have determined, reduced charges of H4831 can cause inconsistent pressures and, therefore, velocities. Using piezo strain gauge on a 300 Win Mag (my pre64) and testing over 100 reduced charges produced only one load that exceeded 45,000 psi. On my 270 (also a pre64), no reduced loads exceeded 42,350 psi.

Does anyone have a personal example where this has caused pressures to spike to the point of brass failure? I appreciate any cited personal examples, the load data used and the results.

I agree with you Handloader. I got it right because I knew the popular thinking on that subject (as I muttered to myself). I have a feeling that we could argue about detenation until the cows came home and we still wouldn't have them convinced. About the only place that I have seen a lot of detenation and secondary pressure excursions is in internal combustion recipricating engines. But that's a fuel vapor and air thing. I'm sure there more examples of this, but as a mechanic all my of life this is the only place I have seen this problem on a continuous basis.

I can follow the thinkin' on this , and very well recall it was part of what I was taught as well ..

If it makes any sense ( no comments from pnut gallery ) , I can understand the concept very easily , but have never actually "seen" any actual proof ..

Similar to the concept , and this one can be shown with a strain gauge , of a pressure pulse at the muzzle .. I forget the whole idea , all my Handloader rags went up in the fire , but Barsness wrote about it a couple years ago .. Doesnt happen all the time , seems until you find the sweet spot , it happens and once you have the supposedly perfect powder/bullet match , it goes away ..

HL , you remember this one ??
