Long story short, I went fishing Saturday morning with my family, and my cousin's future in-laws and their was a kid who was 7 years old that never fished in his life before. I helped him all day untangling line, putting on bait, unhooking fish etc (I'm sure every father here who brought his kids fishing at a young age can relate to the fun I had :-D). He got himself his first fish (Rainbow Trout) today! He didn't want to leave fishing at all, and was crying that he wanted to go back to fish after we had already left. Smile

So I decided to put together his very own first tackle box of goodies for him to fish with, and I was wondering what would you recommend I add to the kit ?? Smile

anything rapala! small easy to use, almost garenteed to catch fish, plus it is colorfull for the kids eyes, you know. if you use them toss some power baits, and a jar or two of salmon eggs in. a couple assorted split shot containers, one of them all purpose nail clipper/hook eye cleaner/etc things.. stringer you know the routine! when i took my kids fishing it was the best time i had, just watching thier faces!!

Morax,

Thanks for the reply. I gave him one of my Rapala minnows while fishing because he seemed to have liked them, and I'm going to put another one or 2 in his kit. Smile

I'm going to try to keep the cost of the whole kit under about 40$ mainly because I shouldn't be spending my money, I'm going to need it once I get a job I'm looking for now and move. But I really want to get the kid a fishing kit so the fishing kit comes first. Laughing

So far I got on the list:

-> Plano 1 Tray Tackle box 6101
-> 10pc Plastic Float Assortment
-> 124pc Split Shot Assortment (in those round compartment containers)
-> 25pc Worm Weight Set (I know them by physical size not number)
-> Owner Offset Shank Hooks (I know by size not number)
-> Octopus Hooks (small size for trout)
-> Strike King Mini-King Spinner Bait
-> Berkley Power Bait (Chartreuse)
-> Some Soft Baits
-> A Rapala Minnow or 2
-> Nail Clippers
-> Stringer

Think it will work as a good kit ?? Smile

now all he needs is the rod and some water!! sounds like a good starter set! i was thinking with the raps, hit a flea market or two and you can usually find em cheap.. tell the kiddo he has to supply the rod and a disposable camera for the ones that dont get away!

Morax,

Some reason no matter what I want to find at a flee market I find they are only good for cheap new import crappy goods and old 80's electronics around here. Sad

As for the rod, he doesn't even need to provide that, considering that it will be another fishing trip with us most likely, and we have a rod or 2 he can use. And as for the camera I've got a Digital one I use generally. Laughing

I should end up going fishing with him again in the next month. So thats when I'll surprise him with the tackle kit (still need to go shopping for it). Smile

George,

I'd be so broke I'd be in debt to my knee's considering I go to Bass Pro to buy tackle, and they got a HUGE area of fishing tackle. Very Happy

Bass Pro has a way better selection then the other "Canadian" stores in the area I find (heck Bass Pro's fishing section is about 3-4 times larger then the larger fishing sections in the outdoor stores here) so I go there alot. Smile

Morax,

Flee Markets aren't like they seem to be in the US. One of these days I'm going to have to go to one south of the boarder. Smile

It could just be a Southern Ontario Flee Market thing that I've noticed though. Confused

Your flea markets sound like some down here, but most of the time you can find all sorts of gear there like he said a buck here to 3-5 dollars

I think there's an important point no one's mentioned here, whatever gear you get him Dimitri, that's a great thing you're doing for that kid. Good for you! Cheers There's plenty of affordable fishing gear out there, there's a reason why beginner's gear is priced cheaper, he isn't going to need anything high end to get started with, get him out there with a line and hook and he'll catch fish Very Happy

You nailed that in one Tracks. Well said mate. e'kosi

I'd consider buying the little fella a Shimano Rod and Reel Combo...they also usually come with a small plastic box with hooks, sinkers and swivels sufficient to get a young'un started.

Well I would say don't get a push-button real if you buy him since I never have figured out how to use an open one no matter how hard I try but get him what he can work with easily. Those cheap little rods and reals can last a long time if used right. I got my nephew a tackel box at Wal-Mart that came with the basics and it was cheap.

Also don't forget the worms, the real things. Fun to catch and works good to.

tracker,

I got him on the water nicely the first time out. With a Carolina Rig, except I'm alittle lazy so no swivel, just a small lead shot holding the worm weight from moving and a Octopus hook with some PowerBait (the Playdough type for trout). Smile

Vince,

Thouse kits are a great deal of frustration to me. Can you believe with the hooks, swivels, weights, soft tackle, and the spoon/spinner normally in them, when I first got one of thouse kits the only thing that seemed to work was the hooks and weights to use worms as bait. Confused

Everything on the list of mine is 100% sure to catch fish for the kid. Heck its basically a "basics only" version of my tackle box, (for me see its difficult to decide what to get the kid so I looked at my own tackle box and cut out all the "extras" Laughing ) so these lures are proven performers for me and I know they'll provide plenty of hours of fun for the kid for most species of fish he'll be going for around here. Smile

I only got one small tackle kit myself, and I use it for everything, has 3 Plano boxes in it, I bought it from Bass Pro but they do not seem to carry them anymore, its a shame was a good bang for the buck box. Sad

Rednecktink,

Never would buy ANYONE a "push button" spincast reel like one of these even if I didn't like them more then anyone else in this world! Thouse things are something I shouldn't say on a public forum! Laughing

Gosh it might be alittle hard to get used to throwing a Spinning reel, but once you learn how to its a piece of cake, the kid learned how to do it pretty fast, that I got to say made me proud to see him being able to cast his own bait in the water with a Spinning reel the first time out on the water. Smile
