English Mike, It is good to hear how things are across the pond even if it is not good news. Stay safe and well!

I saw a headline today that said that the US was now "third in infections" in the world. Well, we also have the 3rd largest population. In infection RATE we were about 41st, with 127 cases per 1 MILLION people. The fatality rate in the US is about 1.2%, compared to about 3.4% worldwide. Here in NC our infection rate is 0.003 cases per 1 million people.

For comparison; Italy has a rate of 1057 cases per 1 million and a fatality rate of 9.5%. I've read that Italy historically has similar high numbers for the regular flu. The problem appears to be their medical system.

www.worldometers.info/...#countries

Interesting when you look at the list of countries and the infections...the countries at the top of the list (the worst) are the so-called civilised countries, whereas the third world countries and other such places where health and hygiene is almost non existent rate very lowly on the infection list. Of interest is the countries that aren’t on the list, North Korea for one, although I’ve heard that they execute on the spot anybody infected.

Something I’ve always maintained is we are too clean these days, we don’t allow our kids to play in the dirt and get dirty like we did as kids. I believe our immune systems have suffered as a result. As soon as a parent sees their child with a little dirt on them, it’s straight inside and get washed. Then there is the hand sanitiser that every mother has in her handbag...it kills all bugs...good and bad. Yep...I reckon we are too clean these days. Just a thought. Rant

Nearest hospital is now closed to all but the most extreme (non covid) cases, with wards consolidated & everywhere with oxygen supply converted to emergency ICU.
Basement fitted out with racking for hundreds of body bags.
No funerals - just immediate cremation & the ashes handed over at a later date.

This is far worse than even this old pessimist predicted.

Mate, I saw this morning that Prince Charles has tested POSITIVE. This does not bode well for the Royal Family, especially for the Queen and Prince Philip. We might have a new monarch sooner than expected.

take care folks.

3rd world countries...
One possible explanation is travel or lack thereof.
1. Its the 3rd world, generally NOT a tourist destination, like Italy.
2. Isolated population centres, think PNG, so no rapid spread of any virus, not a lot of intra city vehicle traffic etc
3. Their immune systems are actually doing what they are supposed to, not that it would help with this current outbreak, no ones immune system would recognise this one, but they may have a lower death rate depending on whether youve already died early or have survived to an age to develop the underlying respiratory issues this bug seems to effect the most.
4. Testing and reporting or more likely the lack of it.

Chalk all that up to laymens speculation.

Well Ive isolated myself, doing maintenance on the motorcycle and sorting out the rental shed and nailing the gunsafe to something solid.
I wont starve, the shops are open and if it gets really bad, next door has Alpacas, I have a gun and know how to dress and breakdown a carcass .
Dont tell me Alpaca tastes like chicken.......

What the scientists are finding is that hot, humid conditions appear to be unfavourable for the virus, hence the equatorial regions being relatively unscathed.
Add to that less reporting, less healthcare & more isolated communities & that shows in the resulting statistics.

Yep, gotta keep in mind that those numbers depend on reporting and testing. No tests means no reported cases. I'm seeing several folks warning that an upcoming spike in US numbers will be due to more testing, not necessarily a large increase in cases.

Seems my company is "essential" so we're working right along. The employees were given a letter to carry in case the local govt cracks down on travel. We make packaging materials for medical and food. The company did give us a temporary raise while this is going on. Honestly I thought that was a pretty nice gesture!

I was reading an article a bit ago about "smart things to do with a stimulus check". Buying a rifle is like investing, isn't it?

That depends on the rifle you buy. You need to find one that has a good chance of appreciating in value. Very Happy Or you have to use it to generate more income... I wonder if bank robbery is an essential business. Scratch Probably not - there is not much of a future in it. Cool

So the USA is going to open for business as usual by Easter.
Can someone explain to "The Donald" the definition of the word pandemic?
Has he not noticed that the US has supassed China in infection rate, is he aware of New York and its current issue?
Truely I do feel sorry for you lot, your leadership really needs a purge, your objection to "social medicine " is truely about to bite you in the bum.
How many who have lost their jobs have also lost their health insurance?
America is capable of great things, but geeze when you lot stuff up you truely do it in a very spectacular way.
Stay at home, stay healthy, practice social distancing, hand washing etc.
Get your leaders to come up with a realistic plan or the Chinese will be the number I economy in the next 12 months, theyll be over this and you guys will be digging mass graves 8 months from now.
Am I being hysterical? I dont think so, the last world wide pandemic killed 20 million and kasted 3 years.
This one has similar potential and its early days.
Stay well

And then the Donald is holding the democrats hostage with withholding moneys to fight the pandemic and wanting a free half TRILLION dollar slush fund with no oversight from the american public. He is a national embarrassment. He wants the US to be number one in everything.... heading towards the most deaths from covid19, and militarizing the Can/US border. Well if keeps the illegals from coming into Canada from the states then great. There would be no problem of Canadians coming to the states as we are dealing with the problem. This is just sad. All of my buddies across the line stay home follow medical advice NOT Donald's fairy tale.

The info I have stated that closing the Canadian-US border was a mutual agreement.
