I'm 67 but believe one can never stop learning.

As a young tot and later in school, I learned that the man-made surface in
which everyone walked on was a FLOOR. If anyone referred to a floor as "the
ground", we would have been laughed out of class.

But now, the police, news media, detective programs, etc., refer to floors as
"the ground". "On the 7th story, we found a body laying on the ground."
Since when is a floor referred to as terra firma? WHY? Seems ignorant as
well as ridiculous to me.

I am with you all the way on this. If someone on the seventh floor found a body on the ground they would have to be looking out the window.

Danno...don't think too hard into it mate...it's "Police speak". You want a good laugh...watch a Police Officer who has lots of "street smarts and experience", but not a lot of education doing an interview and trying to explain a situation...usually the man on the ground is the funniest. They try to put together a blurb using all the Police "buzz words" that are required by "the system"...they sound like a 5 year old trying to speak like his father. It's a scream.

Well Pete, most of those I've heard refer to floors as terra firma are older than
the Tide-pod Alexandria O'crazio Cotex crowd.

Last time I saw a floor that was also the ground was in a yurt in Kazakhstan somewhere around 1988...

a floor is a deck ... probably ties in with the modern math they been teaching for years , and common core ..

A floor is inside a building.
The ground is outside, usually covered with grass, asphalt or concrete.
A deck is hopefully UNDER your feet on a ship or boat.

Sooooo...where does “Ground Floor” fit into this? Is is a floor on the ground, or maybe the ground on a floor, or...my head hurts

That's where the Cousins make things confusing.

Buildings here in the UK have a ground floor at ground level, followed by a first floor.
Buildings in the US have a first floor that is also the ground floor...

Watched a show on Investigation Discovery last week. A civilian and a cop
discovered a body on the FLOOR. Wow! Things were looking up. Then the
investigating detective mentioned that the body was on the ground. My ol'
beaner was spinning.
