How in the heck this happened to me is kinda weird. Never heard of someone doing this, but it happened to me.
Brand new .270 Winchester Ruger American bolt action. I have had the rifle around three months when this happened.
I had the rifle in our bedroom closet up stairs, but for household safety I removed the bolt, put it in a white sock and put it behind the wife dresser for easy excess. Now time went by and I got my junk together to go to the range.
Went upstairs to get the .270 together and when I looked behind the wife,s dresser to get the bolt in the white sock. Then I got completely startled when it wasn,t there ??? Afterwords after I talked to the wife, then I found out where it now was. In the dump. Now next to that corner of her dresser is a trash can. You know, standard household little trash can. The wife was gathering the trash to throw out. When she reached down to pick up this trash can , she saw the white sock. She thought it was something I put there to throw out.Heavy or not it went out with the trash. I called Ruger and told them what happened. Within 7 days I got the rifle back from Ruger with a brand new bolt. No charge. Ruger paid for everything , ship there and back U.P.S.. They E-mailed me the ship tags. I boxed the rifle up and the rest of this story turned out great for me thanks to Ruger.

Why do people insist on removing the bolt and placing it away from the rifle. I have never figured that out. Well.......Except for VINCE and all those poor people in Australia.

All of my rifles and handguns are fully assembled. The ammunition is placed away from the weapons, but not far.

You can't kid proof guns; you are better off teaching them how to handle them properly. My daughter was three when she started learning how to clear a gun before handling them. My son was about the same age when he started showing interest so he was taught then too. There is two years difference in their ages and they learned very well. The first thing they do when handed a gun is to clear it.
I never tried to child-proof my home either - I house broke my kids instead.

here in Kiwiland we have rifles locked away in sturdy cabinet and bolts and ammo stored in seperate location....doesnt work with the pump shottie or the lever rifle...but a trigger lock would fix that one too....
pain in the bum but when your young preteen cousin shoots his younger sister dead with thier fathers hunting rifle........ it tends to make you happy to obey the law,as much of a nusience it may be there is a good/valid reason for it.

Yep kids are not adults. I can remember being obnoxious. I can remember wanting to harm somebody and it wasn't for any serious reason either. Emotions, hormones anything can trigger a bad reaction and if you're not adult enough you can do some damage you'll regret later. You can teach a kid how to handle a gun all you want, but you can't teach a kid to handle emotions and situations until they experience them and that comes with age. I bet you know some adults that can't handle their emotions, so how do you expect a child to react to something he's never experienced. He might do something smart and he might do something reactive and stupid. It takes time to learn.
