The real problem is when your car only has reverse. Happened to my Dad's Olds 85. Tranny crapped out but reverse worked. Drove it back to the house backwards and into the garage. He'd go out every morning and start it up and put it in gear. Did that for a week and the tranny hooked up that one last time - drove straight to the dump. It was a rust bucket anyway.

I don't understand why the other wheel went backwards.....if one wheel is rotating forward (the one in the rollers) I thought the other wheel would not spin at all. I'm feeling stupid, light headed, blond, stoned....got in late last night a bit past my bed-time.

I'm with BushM fix the darned thing and get it over with.

Two gears meshed together will turn in the same direction at the point of contact, but in opposite directions away from point of contact. Same principle here.

Both rear wheel are on the rollers. The rollers go in the opposite direction of the tires, so the car moves backwards. They would roll easier if steel pipe was inside the PVC but it is, at best a temporary solution. Transmissions cost upwards from $1500 to have rebuilt and two to three times that much new.
