What does the Huntingnut member say... do you take your own rifle or rent a local rifle at hunting destination?

Hello & welcome.

If I'm hunting in the US then I generally borrow a rifle off a friend there, as that particular rifle had its hunting loads worked up by myself so I know what it is & isn't capable of.
If I were heading for Africa, then I'd invariably look to taking my own rifles & ammunition, especially as I'm left handed & left eye dominant.

I suppose I'm cheating a little bit here, but as an Aussie I only hunt in Australia, but that us an economic decision more than anything else.

Having said that, like Mike of Pomgolia, I too have developed loads to suit my rifle and I know how the package works.

The two times I hunts overseas, both in Indonesia, there are a restriction to bring firearms into the country.
So I use the locally borrowed rifles.

I don't think I would hunt anywhere I couldn't take my own rifle. For me, at least half the fun is using my rifle with the loads I've developed.

In fact, it's questionable if I would hunt somewhere I couldn't use my own handgun at least for trophy hunting. If I were to do so, the hunting venue would have to be very economical as I don't feel like going a long distance and paying a lot of money and be force to hunt with something I didn't choose.

I'm with Grumulkin on this one, would rather use my own. Borrowed a friends shotgun to hunt quail in Mexico felt kinda nervous about using it, don't borrow cars either.

I understand that my Browning A-bolt .30-06 would do just fine on most game in Africa. My [worked up] handloads from 165 grain to 220 grain bullets will give me a wide range to choose from.

More than a few African countries stipulate a minimum .375 calibre for big game, though plains game is different & .270 Win or 30-06 will put down pretty much anything.

I think what you mean to say is many require at least .375 caliber for very large dangerous game animals like eleppant, rhino and cape buffalo.

I hunted with a PH who did a lot of culling on the side; things like zebra, blue wildebeest, etc. He used a 22-250 and was on his third barrel for the rifle.

I had some eleppants once, couldn't wear them on the bicycle cause they were too fancy....clashed with my sprockets and clothes-pin playing-card simulated motor too. The yellow threads were way too out there for the time, didn't wanna get laughed at. Billowy eleppants in the wind just hold you back, so they were reserved for calm shirtless days with my buffalo cape and rhino hat, it was a dangerous game alright. Flirting with the boys, you had to be careful not to give them blue wildebeestses, makes em madder than heck.

I'm with Bushy, my wild and very very vivid imagination not withstanding, I think we all need some pictures of those rides with no eleppants to hold you back and shirtless to flirt with the boys.
