I am currently running Lubuntu 12.01 but I am thinking that even on the older machine the standard Ubuntu won't slow it down much. The thing is I have all my support software loaded and configured for the way it is.
Suz,
Is there any reason you chose your OS over the Ubuntu package?

Gelandangan,
What are you running?

Well I did it over the internet. If I'd had a disk it would have been much faster, but it was free this way. It's all automated but first you download the files then it installs them and configures them, then it removes the outdated files, the thing is it's over 800meg of files to download and configure. I had to do it in two passes, first from 12.04 to 13.10 then from there to 14.4, so actually I did it in two days with 3hrs or so each day. It's not my computer but I use it the most, we have another computer (laptop) that we're going to do this weekend. Yes we're real fun to be around during this upgrading....lots of potato chips eaten and house chores get done.

Once it's done there's no messing with it, everything is all set up just like you had it before and you get some added new stuff to play around with. Haven't found out what that is yet....but the puter is faster for one thing and for some reason YouTube works better. The desktop can have 4 separate windows to switch to, each with it's own program running but I had that before I think...Oh it's supposed to be better at syncing your portables and communicating with them..I don't have any to try it on.

Yeah, I have four desktops that can all be running different or the same software at the same time. I can have multiple tabs running on each desktop with different software running too but I rarely use the functions.

My system is an old Pentium that I upgraded with a gigabyte of ram. It only has two hard drives and I run a duel boot for my DOS stuff so I keep it on the first drive and Lubuntu on the second.

I think the thing I like the most about Linux is the built in programming languages that you can use. When I get time I am going to upgrade my old DOS software to run in linux and have a more modern interface. You didn't have a lot to work with in DOS back in the day and it might be nice to incorporate mouse and drop-down menus instead of pop up menus that mean switching pages.

rambling...... anyway as long as the OS does what you need and is open source the world is wonderful.

I run Linux as a server, and graft a VM on top of it to run multiple compartmentalized Windows clients.
This way I can totally separate my working files and conditions by the job rather than using separate physical machines.
A bit complicated to setup but you get used to it.

It is good when you sit with a client they do not see the job you do for the others, the "Normal" windows installation is bare bone without any other job, folders, unnecessary programs etc... sorta like I am 100% yours mate!
That gives them a boost of ego and thus I can charge more for the job Laughing

Well done! I don't run any virtual machines yet but I am thinking about try to run one for DOS. That way I don't have to reboot to get to my DOS programs.

That would be the way to go Paul. That, or see if they run fine in DOSBox.

I tried DOSBox and the programs will run to an extent but they won't print from DOSBox - at least in Windoze. The print controls take over the print commands and Windoze won't allow that which is why to this point the easiest way to run the programs is in DOS. I may end up getting another computer to run Dos and then I won't have to reboot the linux/dos machine to switch between operating systems. I can still connect them with a LAN so I can share files and such.
