Vince, why not a peepsight?

Williams makes a great peepsight but I don't think they make an aperature that is big enough that Vince could see through.

Thanks for the pics Aloys. I considered a peep sight, but I am not sure that it would solve my sighting issues. I've heard tell that a shooter that can no longer see iron sights will have no problems with a peep, but I think they would give me problems with fast target acquisition in the bush.

The scope at Midway looks good SSS, but again, it all comes down to dollars and cents which I don't have a lot of right now. Definitely food for thought there though mate.

in my opinion, and I'm sure other will confirm or deny it, a peep sight is faster than optics, it's even faster than iron sights. You look trough the peep with no effords and the only thing you have to point is the front beat...

and don't forget: they don't need batteries as in red dots...

Normally I hate to link to a website but this report on appeture sights says it all.

www.gunsamerica.com/bl...d-goes-to/

It is funny but I have shot appeture sights on Lee Enfields, FALs and assorted SMG' and LMG,s but not on a sporting rifle so I can't comment on hunting use except for shooting a few moose throigh the battle sight of a #4 Lee Enfield.

I agree. Unless you spend a lot of time practicing fast work with a scope, it can be a much slower process. Honestly, at hunting ranges for traditional lever-gun ranges (.30/30, .35 Remington and etc.) a good aperture sight gives up little to nothing to a scope. As to the "red dot" sights, I'm with Aloysius - batteries that are sure to fail just when you need them or electronics that break down. That's why laser sights leave me cold.

I don't find it hard to use a scope fast and in close but you can't just do it with any scope. I use low-power scopes, 1-3x, and shoot both eyes open. However, scopes with good enough optics to do this are not inexpensive So from the cost perspective, I'd go with a peep with a mid to large aperature and use a green fiber-optic front dot. Now there's your combination, Vince.

That sounds very interesting Slim...maybe even a Ghost Ring arrangement.

I tried a Ghost Ring set up on my mate's Remington 7615 and I must admit I didn't have problems with it. Hmmmm....a peep just might be THE option.

Best I do a little more research on this...I know Williams make a good peep sight, and I can get them out here in OZ.
