Plain old saddle soup has water in it. And removes what water proofing that might be on the shoe. In time and use it will deteriate the leather.

Please keep in mind that I am caring for and still using a 70 year old saddle. It's my wifes grandfather's saddle. It has never seen saddle soap. It has seen a lot of neatsfoot oil.

Mink oil? Phhssshhh...Neatsfoot oil. Mink oil is water soluble.

I have to agree. Neatsfoot oil is for leather. I think mink oil is good stuff to disinfect all these little wounds. I have a friend with a mink farm and he always told me that whenever they cut their hands while skinning these animals, it never ulcerates.
So Stovey, you better put this mink oil on your nicely shaven leggs instead of on your booths, it even might be somekind of bait for some animals, maybe for these mammals with short ears...

Aloy! Laughing God he makes me laugh. Razz

Don't let Grampy-pants get yer nest in a wad, Suz....who aint used mink oil. I used the crap outa it! It was great on my old Lowa's and super thick rock boots like that. We used that to soften after a clean and Sno-Seal to waterproof 'em up in Rimrock, Az. And yes you had to hide the tin of Mink stuff or the dogs would have clear waterproof turds for two days! Laughing

Nice rig, Bushy. Pretty big pommel too. Lil Tex/Mex there or?? I ike Mexicna saddles with big roping pommels and a low back for hopping logs.. Good Full/TOP GRAIN leather lasts ages if it don't get wet and is tanned REALLY well to start with. Split grain is for work gloves and cheap stuff. Top Grain is for good boots and saddles. Ever see a saddle made? They soak it water! Ever seen boiled leather? It was used as armor! I seen a leather cannon on Mythbusters! That's a nice rocking chair! Wonder who uses that??? Won't fins one of them here at this shop! Laughing

tanners oil with snow seal over top works well. but I must confess the only oil my work boots get is off the dipstick when I check oil level daily, or grease if I get it on my hands or gloves and cant rub worst of it off on grass.
as for hunting..well my ashleys dont need it!!!

Stovie I had a Mexican saddle and it had a very high cantle and a very high roping horn, very uncomfortable and you could break a rib on the horn if you didn't have your hand on it for support. The one I had was made for working only. A pleasure ride was work on that thing. I loved it when someone wanted to two-up with me (I was small enough) I'd put them in the front and they'd get the abuse, not me. You can't go very fast that way either but it can be rather intimate....I preferred no saddle cause it kept the boys off the horse if you were out-an-about and you could pile on the friends if you wanted to.

Very pretty saddle Bushtoot!! The kinda fancy I bet would be pretty spendy to buy now. You need a nice fancy wooden stand, for that trophy.

It is rather fancy, Suz. It's all bull hide and 90% hand tooled. "spendy to buy now."?? Around 8 years ago I took it to a saddler for some minor repairs. Ask him what it would cost to duplicate the saddle. About 5 to 6 grand.

Seat is not padded, but your butt gets used to it.

Hand made by Vanco of Sacramento, CA.

You think I'm grumpy after 10:00 PM. You ought to try me at 8:00 AM. Even after two cups of coffee. Horses fed and tended to. Dogs exercised, given morning treats. Conversed with wife. Breakfast (one banana).

And here I am.
