I would never make one out of aluminum - no matter which alloy you use it begins to work harden and fracture from the first shot.
With aluminum it isn't a question of if it will fail but when. I have always made mine from steel.

I wish I had a lathe, or at least access to one...be great to make my own insert.

I should be making a set of 410 in 12 ga. in the near future.
How much can it cost to ship "Automotive combustion chamber adapters"?

Not sure what it would cost to ship Paul...maybe $10 - $15 depending on the weight.

Sounds to me like a wonderful excuse to buy another shotty and then you can post it up in "The official never ending what's my next new gun thread"!

scruge Mc Duck did it again!!!
bought the shorter one for under $40 and got a mate of a mate to duplicate it slightly longer for me. had to buzz leading edge to get longer version into forcing cone of 2 3/4" gun. cant wait to try them out. will have to poke empties out with bit of rod but that wont be an issue for the amount we will put through them. might just have to beg a .45 long colt off my buddy to try too. Very Happy

Having never used one of these short adapters, does the 410 wad open up in thr 12 gauge barrel?

aparently it doesnt really matter as your .12ga barrel/choke will control the pattern. my "redneck adaptor" threw quite good patterns at 25yrds. the only thing with a real short adapter vs a long one is not much room to build up pressure/velocity same as a pistol/revolver I guess.

I am so thinking to make an insert for my 12G s/s
I think it will be great to have something like a 30-30 on one barrel and 12g on the other.
The main problem right now is to workout how to eject the spent cartridge from the insert.

with a piece of cleaning rod poked in from business end. the .410 will take a .45 long colt as it is. a 12mm drill takes care of the chamber and the rest piece of cake on a lath. if you got a short section of barrel fat enough to turn down it would be piece of cake to you.

I have actually made a few spoon chamber reamers, so chambering shoudn't be a problem.
Lathe, I have, plans I have..
Its the extractor/ejector that I am worried about.
I have to modify the shotgun so it doesnt eject, and make some extracting mech on the insert to extract the spent cartridges.

personally I would let it eject the insert then pop out the case with a rod. I believe some of the commercial jobs have a slice at 45 degrees cut across the rear end and put a rod inside to join the two back together. the shotguns extractor/ejector moves this piece/wedge back as per normal but the insert/adapter itself stays in place, the inside of the wedge is of course moving the smaller shell backwards with it.

tried my adaptors out this moning just a few shots.
they go bang
pellets go out and seem to pattern nicely
the 2nd one I got made has a sloppy fit as the 12mm drill bit was worn, cases are sticky and stretched so will get used with cases we wont want for reloading.
yip a fun thing to have it doesnt cost me anything from here on wards.
