Suz, when you want a cat, I would recommend a britisch shorthair which is in my opinion closer to a dog (they are rather expensive, but worth it).
On the other hand when you already know how to train a dog and want something close to a cat, go for a german teckle, which is IMHO the most clever dog. They are so smart they can manipulate other dogs and even their owners.
But when it's your first dog, never start with a teckle!
