My brother has been using a "red-neck" 410 adapter in his 12 gauge to hunt grouse successfully. It is a short piece of 3/8" pipe screwed into a 12 gauge shell with a hole drilled into the base. The pipe is screwed into the 12 gauge shell and then cut flush with the base. The 410 cartridge is inserted and the rig is put into his break-open single action and fired. Shells come out of the adapter hard at times but they are reloadable (his statement not mine).
The 12 ga has a full choke and it seems to work to keep the pattern small and there is enough velocity to kill the birds.
Personally I would rather use seemless tubing and use it as a barrel insert - full length with its own choke but I am not sure it would do any better than the simple to build "red-neck" adapter.

from what I have read the choke of the biggger barrel works just the same and would probably not be too hard on the shot either. the degree of choke is the same no matter what guage you use eg expressed as a % of the original load the .410 just has less pellets to start with so I prefer full choke to give me a similar pattern density as a .12ga with cylinder bore or improved cylinder so to speak.

oh dear we have hi jacked this thread too Embarassed Embarassed
PaulS you shouldnt put ideas in my head Shocked I just so happen to have a piece of pipe the right size Shocked but not a big enough drill to get it to thread onto the shell Sad
but the" she will be right mate" KIWI DIY came into play and I had a tootoo and bugga me days it went bang and the required bits went where they were supposed to Very Happy Very Happy
thanks for the suggestion I will keep playing with it till I get it right. Im thinking one of those brass snap caps drill/reemed out to accept the pipe/tube and then brazing it in place would be a good bet and heaps cheaper than the real macoy. Very Happy Very Happy

Be interested to see some pics Paul...it sounds like a good idea.

Back to the .308 loading...How is it all going Robbo? Got some loads together and down range yet mate?

Cheers, Vince

Well, as long as we have highjacked the thread already.....
I will send an email to my brother to get some pics - He is up on the mountain and not due back until the end of July.
If you can deprime the 12 ga shell and drill it out to just the diameter of the pipe thread (narrow end) you can screw the pipe into the shell from the crimp end and then make it so the 410 shell is flush with the brass of the 12 ga shell. I will post pics when I get them.
