The White House has decided to sideline a proposed fee on Christmas trees, after the fee was ridiculed by critics as a tax on Christmas.

The 15-cent tax on Christmas trees was announced Tuesday in the Federal Register and was meant to pay for a new board tasked with promoting the Christmas tree industry. It was supported by Christmas tree growers, who wanted a stable source of revenue to fund a new marketing campaign.

But the change quickly drew complaints from Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., and others. Scalise described the fee as a "Grinch" move by the Obama administration and vowed to fight it.

White House spokesman Matt Lehrich told Fox News on Wednesday afternoon that the administration is putting a stop to the proposal.

"I can tell you unequivocally that the Obama administration is not taxing Christmas trees. What's being talked about here is an industry group deciding to impose fees on itself to fund a promotional campaign, similar to how the dairy producers have created the 'Got Milk?' campaign," he said. "That said, USDA is going to delay implementation and revisit this action."

ITD hit the nail squarely on the head when he said that anything that will assist business in the home country and assist in employment has got to be a good thing.

So long as the money raised in these taxes is not salted away in some ludicrous scheme or agenda that a half baked politician has on his back burner to satisfy one of his backers, then I can't see a problem with such a small tax.

Cheers, Vince

The problem with this whole thing is that our illustrious government is being disingenuous (that’s liberal talk for liar).

On top of all the other new taxes this year, local, state and federal and the new taxes we hear they want to enact such as the fat tax, you know tax anything that is not healthy- soda, hamburgers etc, etc. This Christmas tree tax is both a sham and hypocritical.

The sham part is that The National Christmas Tree Association with a membership of about 5,100 and an industry that only employees about 100,000 people say they need $5,250,000 in a new tax on the 35 million trees they sell each year. (Data from the University of Illinois and the National Christmas Tree Association) Who will manage the money, well the board of directors of The National Christmas Tree Association of course, another lobbyist group. Yep, that’s what we need richer lobbyists funneling more taxpayer dollars back into political candidates who pass laws to payoff lobbyists. Kinda reminds me of that 100 euro note floating around a small Irish town.

There is no Christmas tree problem. Want to know what the problem really is; it’s a lack of Christians you know the folks who buy, what, oh yeah Christmas trees. Why? Well who’s being allowed to legally immigrate to the U S? Muslims, atheists, all of Obama’s family from Kenya, and God only knows who else. About the only way we get any new Christians in this country is illegally across our southern border.

Oh yeah, and hypocritical, no not them we still have a Christmas tree on the White House lawn, but God forbid there are any at schools, or the local town hall, or at the store, or the mall, or anywhere else two or more citizens might congregate.

I am a Christian, but I do not celebrate Christmas (a pagan holiday adopted by the early Church to promote tree sales, I think) so the $.15 doesn’t mean a thing to me, it’s the lies that pi-s me off. And, what’s next, oh yeah a penis tax based on annual estimated use. Oh and we’ll use Congressmen as the baseline of utilization after all they are sc—wing 300,000,000 people a day. That way we can keep the tax rate low utilize the volume and no one will notice.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
