I read this article in January 2011 Guns Magazine then found it on-line. I found it pretty interesting. Here is the first paragraph.

"Taper-bores are the stuff dreams are made of. Imagine firing a bullet that begins life as one caliber down a bore that progressively gets smaller and smaller in diameter. What emerges is a bullet of smaller caliber with an improved ballistic coefficient at a relatively high velocity. The late Australian gunsmith and cartridge designer, Arthur Langsford, had a better idea. Why not just dispense with the taper-bore design and simply fire a conventional .22 Long Rifle cartridge down a 17- or 20-caliber barrel and see what you get? What he got is one of the most intriguing stories in rimfire history."

Aloys, I expected you to respond to this post. However, I thought you would tell me that you already had one of these squeeze-bore rifles. You, the collector of 22's!!

The first magazines off the press get sent to subscribers. Later, they get shipped to news stands, at which time they should be arriving just before January. Thus, I usually get my magazines a month or so early. No HP about it.

That idea is very interesting. Wonder if I would be able to source one of those barrels...probably not...they would be all well and truly spoken for now.

A very interesting concept though.

Cheers, Vince

It doesn't hurt to try! Send Arthur Langsford a proposal, pop a cool one, and what for his response. Better yet, he is just down the path from you!Langsford has his gun shop in Broken Hill, Australia.

Oops, looks like I missed all the details. Aurthur Langsford passed away in 2008.

Vince, bet you could still get a hold of his drawings, old barrel, etc. and build your own .22 to .17!

The description of his later barrels sounds like the just have a longer lead that swages the bullet to fit the barrel. Like using a .25 caliber in a 6mm barrel or a 6.5mm in a 25caliber barrel.
All you would need is the right rifle and a special reamer to rechamber and add the longer lead into the rifling.
