"Hypothetical" question on an AR15 M4

I have a "hypothetical" question for you guys.

I see that Bushmaster M4s are going for around $1700.00 on GunBroker.
Would a person be safer to sell his M4 to a private party instead of advertising to the ATF that that person has guns like this in his or her collection?

Just a "hypothetical" question of course.
