Hello gang.

I have a question. Next spring I plan to get into some cowboy action shooting.
I was planning on buying a Stagecoach shotgun, but got to thinking that I have an old Agmearms 60 shotgun with exposed hammers in my gun case. It is made in Belgium. The barrels look NOT to be damascus.
It is tight, but needs cosmetic work, and there is a good gunsmith in town who does some really nice work restoring guns.
I figure that if I can get this gun looking OK, and able to shoot without killing me in the process, it would be a fun gun to have for CAS.
I don't think that this gun is worth much so doing this shouldn't mess up any value.

Do any of you folks know anything about this shotgun?
I can't find a darn thing about it on the internet.

When it's an old double then it's strange it carries a name. "Agmearms 60" doesn't ring a bell here.
What's the caliber? Please check the length of the chambers before you shoot them.
And to check it's quality: normally you can find the weigth of the barrels (at date of production) on the underside of the barrel. It says something as 1 Kg 460, meaning this barrel weighted 1,460 kg when new. A simple scale (and for you some calculation from lbs to kg) will tell you if it's worn and/or cut shorter.

And don't worry: these guns were made to shoot, I'm still shooting them occasionally (and it's great fun, sure when you reload using blackpowder).
Don't use steel shot with them, they survived lead till now so don't ruin them for political reasons.

When you give the marks they put on the barrels, I'll try to look up how old etc. it is. We have a rather long tradition in teststamps.

And just 1 correction in your statement: don't worry about it's looks, it doesn't have to look OK to shoot OK and to love it.

Aloysius makes several very good points. I would just add that, assuming a safe firearm, the light loads used in CAS won't stress a shotgun that is in good shape to begin with. Besides, you get to shoot a little bit of history rather than a new shotgun just made to look old!

My son picked up one of these shotguns about 10 years ago and it was 12g double made by Agme Arms Co. in Belgium. The barrels are damascus and he shot light loads of BP in it. When he bought it he took it to a smith and had the gun checked out and was fine for BP only. I do remember the chamber measured at 2 9/16" and he was able to use 2 1/2" shells.

Definitely take it to a smith and have it checked out.

The barrels don't have the damascus look, but a gun with hammers gives me cause to be caution.
I will have it checked out before shooting it.
Something old with hammers would look sweet in CAS.
A Stoeger Stagecoach is priced at $295.00 at my local gun shop so if I can get it rebuilt for $400.00 or less, I would go the way of the old classic shotgun like this one.
