ok so this year i'm actually gonna do it for myself. i've for the longest time wanted to turkey hunt but i don't no anyone that does, to give me a rundown, or tips, or advice, or any sorta knowledge on calling or whatever. so this is the year i'ma do it the old fashion way and teach myself. i got a tape to try to mimic calls and purs. i just bought me afew mouth calls, wich brings me to my question what is everyones favorite kinda call? and is there any reason you prefer that one. thanks -Red

Howdy red head you will get addicted real fast. For slate or glass call's I prefer HS STRUT. For mouth calls I seem to do better with QuakerBoy. I prefer the doulble reed and the triple reed calls. The triple reed calls I seem to do better kee kee's with ( a distress call from a young bird ) and for fall hunting is a very good call to learn. If ya can bust up the flock ya wait about a half hour and start with the kee kee and the older hens will run over top of ya. Turkeys don't like to be out of the flock. As far as learning how to call your doing what i did I got a tape and practiced it will take a little time but keep after it you will get it. Slate and glass calls do a real nice job as well they purr real nice.There's nothing like calling your first bird in. Good luck with it, it's a lota fun.

I have yet to master the mouth calls. I keep trying though but usually it's spit-tooey and it flys out of my mouth or I have too much spray.
My favorite is the box calls followed by slate. The box calls give a richness to the tone of the calls that can't be duplicated with a mouth call. With my box calls I do not use chalk. Instead I use rosin to prep the call. That alone gives a richer tone than chalk.
On my slate/glass calls I rough them up good with sandpaper then apply some rosin to those calls too. It waterproofs box and slate calls so that they work when wet. Chalk won't do that.
Now if I could just glue that mouth call in so that it will stay in place. I also need a splatter guard too
If you really want to learn go on a guided hunt and sit back, listen and learn when the guide does the calling. Nothing better than an outdoors classroom.

I prefer mouth call to the slate and box call. Keeps my hands free. I like the Quakerboy and HS Stut mouth calls.
