I was under the impression that I had found my wife a hunting rifle some time back but after looking around yesterday and today at the local gun shops she has now settled on a 7.62 russian. I have no problems with it as long as she is happy and I have been reading some good things about them. I am curious if yall think its is something I should consider. The gun has a sporterized stock and a Barska 3-9x40 scope on it and it is priced at $350? is this something that is worth investing my money into or should I steer clear of this gun?

If you mean the 7.62 x 54mm Rimmed, it is about like a .30-06 or .308, surely an adequate hunting round. I picked up a Mosin Nagant M91/30, complete with bayonet, sling, cleaning kit and four ammo pouches, for $100 recently and have seen them advertised for about $80. The M44s are a bit more expensive. I've looked a little at getting an M44 and sporterizing it for a "truck gun". I'm not sure how the one you saw is sporterized but that sounds a little high to me.

If you mean a 7.62 x 39mm its similar to a .30-30. I haven't played with any of those, yet...

It is a 7.62x54r and when i mean sporterized I mean that it does not have the mil spec stock on it, it has a sporterized stock like what you would find on a hunting rifle and Has a scope mount and scope on it.

they are dirt cheap over here, the round falls between 308 and 30/06.
someone may have put the stock on it and not liked it. ati make stocks and bolt conversions as they were a straight bolt? the bolt stuck out and was lifted up I believe. the movie "stalengrad" is about a sniper using this rifle.
shop around/look into it as you can get the raw product cheap and get stock etc and do the project yourself.for the same money a marlin or 4x4 could well be a better option .

Wanna make your own real cheap? This place has a barreled action in that caliber for $60, or you can get the whole gun for under $100. My kinda deal. Really it's a great caliber too. Very light weight to carry but they kick. You could put a heavier stock on it and be more comfy shooting it. I put a jell type butt pad on mine and it works great.

I agree with what Suz says about the recoil; I hardly notice recoil off most rifles & was surprised when I felt it from an M44. Definitely more noticeable than .270 & .308.

It depends who did what to the rifle and how it was done. A price of $350 sounds a bit high. I would check the used gun racks and see what is available. Around here, used Savage bolt action rifles in .270 or .30-06 sell for about $200. So it depends. All the best...

$350 is high, if ya ask me. And, I dont mean to offend, but that scope is worth about $10.
