Personally,I would pick out what bullet you want to use and what for. Then look up the load data ..Start with the starting load then work up to the most accurate load that your particular gun likes....Dave

Yeah, tell us what your gonna do with the rifle...

I'd play around with Boat Tail 150's in a .308 Rem 700, and likely be happy.................

As wildswalker says....let us know what your ultimate use will be for your .308

Like wildswalker, I would be looking at 150gn - 165gn bullets. Not much you can't do with that range of bullet weights. Decide on your application then have a look at some loads in the relevant hand loading guides. Varget is a good powder for the .308 that was actually manufactured for that calibre.

If you haven't done any reloading then I strongly suggest that you get some guidance/advice in that area as well before getting into it.

Cheers, Vince

hey vince and all. im from nz. i plan to use the .308 to shoot deer goats tahr chamios rabbits ect. pretty much anything that moves here in nz. but tahr are the hardest to knock down. range will be out to about 500m. was thinking about 162 grains would be good. i do a bit of reloading for my .243 already so just dispersing to my other rifles now and to my bros .223. thanks all for the info. will have to find equivalant powders here. mainly have the AR range. i was thinking AR2208, winchester primers and remington brass since i shoot it already.

Gidday mate....you are on the right track with 2208. I use it to load for my .243 and my 30.30 and it delivers good accuracy in both.

I am using Winchester brass, Federal primers, Winchester 150gn PPFN bullets and 34 gns AR2208 in my 30.30 Win Model 94. Remington brass, Remington primers, 80gn Remington PSP and 34 gns AR2208 in my .243 Weatherby Vanguard.

I also use AR2208 loading for my mates Howa Mountaineer in .223 using 55gn bullets....very accurate.

Gidday Wildswalker. Barnes bullets are pretty expensive out here in Australia, and I would imagine that they are similarly priced in New Zealand. The cheapest I can get the Barnes .308 150gn TSX is $66 a box of 50 and the .243 85gn TSX is $54 a box of 50. Damned expensive.

I use Winchester 150gn PPFN for my 30.30 at $32 per hundred and Remington 80gn PSP for my 243 at $19 per hundred which is more affordable......damn I hate being on a pension!! Both Winchester and Remington market these as bulk projectiles in plastic bags out here. I don't believe that they are "factory seconds" or similar and they have not let me down.....yet. Having said that, from reading all of the posts on HuntingNut regarding the TSX bullets, there is no doubt in my mind that they are a damned fine bullet. I just wish I could afford them. Sad

Cheers, Vince
