Hi
I am going to load up some light loads for practice and will be using them in a 7 1/2" Ruger Super Blackhawk and a Win 94. I will be loading 200 grain Oregon Trails Laser Cast bullets ( I have a lot of them) and using Alliant 2400 powder.

I looked in Lymans 48 edition and they only list loads for 200 grain JHP (19.5 to 23.6 grains) so I looked in Lee's "one book/one caliber" and they list a Lyman 200 grain cast bullets with 19.0-24.0 grains of 2400. Does that sound reasonable, not that I don't trust Lee . If they are correct, I was going to load at 20 grains and see what happens.

As to OAL, since some will go in a tube feed,I was just going to seat to the top ring on the bullet, I should think it would be close to the Lyman recomended lenght of 1.692.

Does all of the above sound reasonable?

I don't got a reloading manual around (other then thouse small free-bee Hodgdon and IMR ones because I dont reload yet) so I dont know about the accuracy of that.

If you load cast bullets that heavy you risk leading the barrel. I keep even very hard cast bullets below 1200 fps or spend many hours scrubbing the lead out. Try using a 44 special loads for light loads. Besides they are more fun to plink with. I use 10.5gr 2400 - 200gr cast bullets in my SBH 7.5 for about 800 fps. Or will go with 14,0 gr 2400 200gr lazer cast to get around 1100 fps. My Hornday book (4th) list a 200 grn jacketed bullet using from 19.4 to 22.1 gr of 2400 with 1300 to 1500 fps. This in my experience is too fast for cast bullets. Good luck.

SteveOB- First, welcome to the forum, there are some great people here.

If I use 44 SPL load data in 44 mag cases, won't I build extra pressure since the 44 mag cases are longer ?

Also, if you are using 200 grain laser cast bullets, what OAL do you use?

kbis: my light loads for the 44 Magnum include the 200gr Lazer Cast over 5.5 gr of Trail Boss for 810fps. This is a highly accurate load in both of my revolvers and the chronograph shows very low SDs (9 to 11 fps).

As you may be aware, Trail Boss was introduced for mild loads and assures high volumetric filling. It is unaffected by powder position in the case. I use standard primers and it seems to ignite easily.

Most of all, it is really a fun load for practice and I now use Trail Boss in the 45 Colt and 44-40 as well.

Dimitri-thanks for the link, I printed the Alliant specs out, tried one of the other programs and it didn't seem to work to well.

Handloader-I have heard lots of good things about Trail Boss, especially from my 45/70 friends. My only problem is there are NO gun shops around here, the closest one is 55 miles one way and I don't have any Trail Boss.

I did load some rounds up with 19.2 grains of 2400 and the 200 grain Oregon Trails Laser Cast bullets. I just seated them to the canelure (sp?) and came up with an OAL of 1.570. We shall see what happens.

Anyone who uses the data on a web page - even here should check those loads with their manuals. Most internet page sites have loads that were worked up without the benifit of SAAMI pressure test equipment and don't define the components used in the work up of the loads. Some loads that I have seen are just over max while others could be dangerous in your gun.
Some post warnings and others don't.

Be safe and check the manuals and never exceed maximum listed loads.
