Had a "discussion" online about primers that led me to do some research. Part of the "discussion" was about how much priming material is in primers of different sizes and types. This link is one of the few reliable sources I found so I thought I'd share it.

I remember some time ago one of our Nuts, Slim comes to mind, but don’t quote me on that, put up a document showing the brisance of different primer brands and types. Not sure where it may be now though.

I swap around without issues but are cautious about std for magnum. I personally believe because my loads aren't hot to begin with,I've got enough wiggle room to substitute and not strike problems. My shotgun loading manual shows it does make a difference in a shot shell pressure wise.

I agree with Elvis on substituting magnum and standard primers, not that that many of you guys and gals on the site will need to do this in the situations that I do but here goes. I have worked up a load for my 22-250 with standard primers for mainly coyote hunting in the western prairies of Canada; Saskatchewan, Alberta Manitoba AO's. I found that at -39F/-28C and -40F/C the bullet drop was in the 4" range consistently. I went home and thought that the change in velocity might be mitigated by a hotter primer, so I changed the primer out to the Winchester magnum primers that I had and recorded the velocities and impacts at range and I'd be damned if they didn't match my same results as the regular load but only at -40F/C and colder. -39F my hits were high and all over the place. Such is reloading, but damn it is fun as hell.
