I was going to use a 1903-A3 sporter for the project, but like it the way it is and did not want to tear it apart. Last Saturday, I found a .270 Husqvarna sporter with a rough bore. The Adams & Bennett .338-06 barrel has found a home. The local gunsmith will get the rifle and barrel this week. He is a swell gunsmith, but a bit slow. All the best...

Yo, Gil; I think you made a better choice with the Husqvarna action. Of course, I have never liked the '03 A3 at all, at all.

I have thought that I might like to have a 338-06. It looks a very practical caliber.

Keep us advised regarding accuracy, loads and all that.

The first loads I sent down the pipe used Wheatherby brass, CCI 200 primers and 58 grains of IMR4350 I used a Speer 200 grain bullet ( 2405 )

I used this all during the breaking period. A push is all you will get. It allowed me to break in the barrel with less scrubbing that I had been used to.

I don't know if you like them or not, but my .338-06 encore pistol shoots great. I imagine a rifle barrel would shoot as good, I an getting about 2450 fps out of a 17" barrel. Shoots into about 1 to 1 1/4 inches at 100 yards.

One thing I did have to do was to get new scope rings. The Savage scope rings just didn't clamp the scope secure enough. I suppose they would have been ok for 270 winchester which the rifle was initially built as. In addition, I completely stripped the stock, free floated the barrel channel and used boiled linseed oil to finish the wood. It's not walnut but a darn sight better than it looked from the factory.

Reloading side,
One other thing make sure you check the case length each time you reload. I find there is a fair amount of growth that requires trimming. I have had good luck with Speer Bullets. For me they seem to group well and the effects on game have not disappointed me. I'm seeing 2670 ft/ sec. with 200 grain bullets. Groups are 1 inch at 100 yards.

Good luck on your .338-06 project! It's a great cartridge that I've used on elk and moose here in Wyoming. My rifle is a Pre-64 Win M70 barreled action that was rebored to .338. It has a French Walnut stock with Ebony forend tip and Neidner blued grip cap. It is checkered in a Fleur-de-lis wrap around pattern while a Pachmayr Old English recoil pad is on the butt. It routinely groups 3 Nosler 210gr. Partitions in 1 1/8" using IMR4064 powder. Attached is a pic.
