A few people have reported having their data "missing" after recently upgrading a version of PointBlank. In virtually all of these cases, the data was recovered. Let me explain the original problem, my fix, and how to find your "missing data".

Initially I used a relative file path when writing out the database. The problem with this is that the "relative" part didn't always correspond to the directory PointBlank existed in (due to windows being really stupid). The database.xml was sometimes written out into odd places causing problems. To combat this, I get the literal path of the pointblank executable, and read/write the file at that location. This fixed a lot of issues, but if the file happened to be one of those written out to "an odd place", it wouldn't get read in from that place.

So, if you are one of those users who runs pointblank and all your data is suddenly missing, try searching on your C: drive for "DATABASE.XML", if you find one anywhere other than the directory PointBlank exists in, you will want to move it into that directory.

This doesn't affect everyone, but it has been the solution for the few people who contacted me with the issue.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

My computer hard drive crashed a couple weeks ago. I have new computer down loaded Point blank copied all the old files I could find from the old hard drive and ran the converter from v1.8a. This recovered all my old loads from before I upgraded to v2.0. But all my loads from before I up graded sometime in maybe Sept. on I am not able to find. I still have the old hard drive. Is there some where else I can look.
Thanks Danny

search the old hard drive for DATABASE.XML, that is the file that contains all of the PointBlank v2.0 data.

If you look in the PointBlank folder on the old drive, there are also backups of the database in the Backups folder. Can you find any of these?

There will be a folder named BACKUP that gets created when the program is patched, it will make a backup your data. Look in there for any files, the naming format is YEARMONTHDAY (ie today would be 202006080).

COPY the most recent one back into the main pointblank folder, rename it to be database.xml. That should give you your data back (according to when the last backup was made).

Everyone should backup all their important files, from time to time.
