Dallan, I hope I'm in the right area for this question.

OK gang, here goes.
A good friend of mine fell in love with my S&W K38 Target Masterpiece.
He has been looking around and can't find one like mine for sale.
Now he is thinking about a Model 14 K38 in stead.
His question to me, [which I can't answer] is the same question I'm asking to you folks who know a lot more than me about this.
Is the trigger and hammer on the K38 Model 14 hand tuned match trigger and hammer, or after him buying the 14 and they aren't match triggers and hammers can he buy the matched parts and install them himself.

I hope that this question is enough for you to be able to help him on this subject.

Eric...it's my understanding that the K38 is built on the K Frame revolver and as such the parts should be interchangeable.

Another option is to have a trigger job done by a competent operator. Notice I didn't say pistol smith...if a guy knows what he is doing, it is not difficult to tune the action on a S&W revolver. The action on my 586 L Frame was done by a mate, and it was as smooth as silk and broke like a piece of fine crystal...all done with Arkansas Stones.

If the trigger pull is smooth but just too heavy, a quick fix is to replace the springs with a Wolf spring kit. They really make a difference. If the pull is gritty and/or "binds", good gunsmithing is required.

The Model 14 is a K38...... the change from K38 to Model 14 only came about because of S&W's decision to go to a number designation for their product lines !!!

All K38's and Model 14's were available with or without target triggers and hammers, they also came with target hammer and standard trigger. My assumption would be regardless of what combination of hammer and trigger the gun came with it would have been tuned.

My personal believe is there is no such thing as drop in parts if you want it done right !!!

Last Spring I did a post with pictures of my K38 Target Masterpiece that I purchased. It was made in 1956 and is in pristine condition.
Sense then it has attracted quite a following with it's beauty, accuracy, and smooth trigger and hammer.
Several shooters have been on the hunt for this same model and can't find any. Even the owner of the gun range where I oversee shooting leagues can't find any. They are now thinking about getting model 14s and trying to upgrade to my gun's specs. They just want to see if it is doable.
It is kind of nice to own a "legend" if you know what I mean
