Anyone,

I've been trying to shrink a photo down small enough to put my ugly mug out on this forum and for the life of me, I can’t figure it out! What’s the secret? I know that I don’t want to go down to the local voodoo doctor and get my head shrunk to a smaller mega-pixel size. Any advice?

Here's a web site story from Fox News that I found quite interesting. (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,332604,00.html)
It contains information about a Doomsday Seed Vault that was just constructed in Norway to save hundreds of thousands of food crop seeds just in case we have a worldwide disaster of some kind (they used earthquake or nuclear strike as an example of manmade and natural disasters). The also state that there are numerous of these all over the world.

I'm starting to wonder if they know something that they're not telling us (i.e. 2012).

I wouldn't be too worried. Biggest reason for these "vaults" is not the end of the world, cause no matter what they say a large scale Nuclear war (the only one we'd seriously "need" these vaults for, ie End of the world doomsday happening is unlikly and if it did there would be no need for the seeds anyways) life on Earth will be too far gone, and we as a species will most likely be extincted. So we couldn't replant these seeds anyways.

At best these things will be helpful for the possibility a "bad" genetically altered crop comes around and it infects the natural versions of it wiping it out. Then we'd have to wait till the altered stuff is all dead, the spores are gone then we can replant using these seeds.

But seriously we don't need all that many seed types locked away "just in case" for this, the most important would be wheat (different types of trees for wood, and other food stuffs), as without it as a whole we have limited food options (consider how much food we eat on a day to day basis is made up of it). As well as the fact we use wheat to feed livestock etc. Smile

I say don't worry about it, its another socialist scheme at "comforting" people about these types of things. And I don't think they are storing enough wheat and other IMPORTANT plants seeds in the vault to matter much anyways. Wink

Just my 2 cents on the subject. Laughing

Dimitri

First, Thanks Dimitri for helping me with my photograph.

I agree with you completely. As a scientist my biggest worry is a cross species plant virus mutation. There are probably less than 5 or 6 main species (families) of plants that make up the vast majority of human food. An example would be the cucurbit family that includes cucumbers, squash, and all the melons, etc. The legumes are another large family of plants that include all beans, peas, peanuts, etc. Of course you have the grass family that includes corn, sorghums, and rice, etc. We currently have a plant virus called the mosaic virus that has already jumped across about three species. It is very destructive and prone to mutation. If this virus were to get more aggressive, in plant destruction, and jump to one or two more species, we could have a worldwide shortage of food in a very short period of time. The potato famine in Ireland is a good example of what a plant disease can do when only a few species of plants are grown for food. Of course we could eat the meat of herbivores, until the grasses died.

Thats a good point! Viruses and the like can also be a problem, still these more natural "problems" I think will be alright in the long run, cause nature adapts and evolves very quickly at times and can pull a trick or 2 from its sleeve to surprise us. Smile

I turned in my chef coat for a lab coat and booties.
stupid really we arent even in a clean room mainly for the customers that walk through with the engineers.

I heard we are already in the food shortage and our wheat isnt as good now. With the pesticides that are used the bees try to polinate and end up carrying the pesticides back to the colonies and it kills the colonies.
Also since gas prices are up we are planting more corn for bio fuel and thats using the same fields as the wheat. hence prices go up on it too.
people here are already stocking up like its the end of the world.
mormons dont count they already have been stocking up for years

here check this out ya'll might find it interesting what is going on we arent hearing about
