Ah, the art of crimping . . .

IMO, big bore revolvers respond best to a proper roll crimp, one in which the mouth enters the crimp groove and barely bottoms out. Too much crimp bulges the case and makes chambering difficult, too little allows creep. Taper crimps work well on cartridges for automatics.

if there is a jam yoou are stuck, but with a wheel gun you just pull the trigger again? umm if it is jammed it is jammed dont matter what it is.

My dear Morax,

Provided the gun is in good working condition, most gun "jam" are due to ammunition problem of either
- primers failure to detonate
- feeding problem
- ejection of spent case problem.

My apology for not making this clear, I have been assuming that this information is well known.

Gelan

gel, first i know what you are trying to say, but I aint no DEAR hahhah
and the examples you state only 2 are a "JAM" if you keep your arms in good condition then one or possably both wont be a problem, yes wheelers are less trouble but double taps are fun, and not just 3 of them..

and not only this but ok the auto dont slide/eject the shell, or fails to load one up, thus jamming, making the thing inoperable,
a wheel gun hits a squib, puts the lead halfway down the barrel, or the indexer slips due to dirt and the cylder is off a little bit and ya just pull the trigger again what happens? the both have thier pros and cons ,
for a more generic pull out of drawer once a year fire it and forget about it buy a wheeler, it will 99% of the time go boom,
i have had both, i have a wheeler now that i could leave outside in muck for 6 months and it will fire, i have one that if you look at it funny it misfires and jams! (i know whats wrong just aint fixed it). but i have the same in autos..

to get back to the origional question of first gun and not a autov.s wheeler..

first thing you do, go to a gun show and for the first hour just walk around and look but dont touch.. then when you have decided what looks good to you, pick one up, see how it feels in your hand, does it fit your grip, feel balanced and not "in your hand" but an extention of your hand? then you can deal with it being a wheeler or an auto and the caliber, a lot of companies make the same framed guns in different calibers so thats an almost non issue.. i personally like anything from the 38 and up for a carry arm, for plinking and learnin the basics of handgunning get a 22.

bushmaster, That happened to my dad about 20 years ago when he was working up some very hot loads with the 44 mag in a blackhawk. I just read an artical some place that says to fire 5 of your 6 rounds and measure the 6th to see if your load is backing the bullet out. figure I'll do that with mine... when its mine...

Bodyalter...That's how it's done. If you get the crimp right it reduces the problem by 99%. I've only had it happen once and that was with a Federal .357 magnum round. And wouldn't you know it...It moved forward on the off side of the cylinder and and I had to push it back in to get the cylinder free to rotate. Had it been on the swing out side that's all I would have had to done.

Morax...I hope you were just kidding when you said that all you had to do with this type of revolver jam was to just keep pulling the trigger... Very Happy

yes it was a play on the fact that if the auto jams ya cant pull the trigger, whereas on the wheeler "hey we can call ya lefty".. friend of mine had a squib that put the round just into the barrel out of a 357, thus accually JAMMING the cylider from turning opening or anything!!

Gidday Bushy. Yes mate....this has happened to me. Sorted out the problem by correcting my crimp.

A bullet crept far enough out to jam up the cylinder and it wouldn't turn.

Cheers, Vince

Yeah Bushy I have. The ammo maker, Buffalo Bore warns of a possibility of rounds "jumping the crimp" when shot in certain guns. Check it out on midwayusa.com. That's where I seen it.
