My wife and I went on a hog hunt in November. She shot her's with a 1968 Remington 760 carbine, with Renington 165 gr core-lokt. I shot mine with a S&W 500 with Hornady 350 gr xtp. I had a high lung shot, it put him on his side but no pass through. I had two shots within an inch of each other and no pass through. Next time I'll use a 400 gr jsp or hard cast. My wife shot hers comeing at her. Hit it in the snout and the bullet went through it's neck, putting it down. We had to put another shot into its chest to finish it off. Very tough animals! Look at my photo album for the pics. The Weight of them were 225 to 250 lbs each.
Hope you have good luck and alot of fun.
JR

Cool It appears that I am not the only person recommending the use of a hardcast bullet in a Handgun. JSPs and JHPs out of a handgun will get you hurt or at least you will be close to having to change your drawers!! In my experiences I have observed that 1) Rifles pushing a bullet with an SD of .220 + will anchor a wild hog with no problems, 2) .50 cal + Muzzleloaders loaded with Maxi Bullets, PowerBelts etc will not have any problem (***DO NOT USE SOFT JACKETED HANDGUN BULLETS***) patched round balls also do a very good job at closer ranges. 3) 12 ga & 20 ga slugs work very well at closer ranges. 4) .357s with heavy hardcast or the Nosler Handgun Partition will do the job but keep the shots under 30 yards for the best effect, hard cast bullets in the other magnums loaded to 1100fps + with a large metplat work very well with well placed shots. But my #1 Favorite is my 45-70 Contender with a Mountain Molds 340 gr Linotype bullet, this bullet has a barrel riding secant ogive with an 80% bullet caliber metplat, crimp groove, 2 lube grooves and a flat base. I load this with H322 to a velocity of 1550fps. It will flatten anything you hit with it, the wound channel runs @ 1.5" in diameter near all the way through, I have never recovered a bullet from anything shot with it and I've never lost anything hit with it either. Cool

im looking for a place here in pa to go on a boar hunt, preferabley with a bow or if not a .280 rem. my biggest concern is that it not be a "canned" type hunt or like shooting fish in a barrel.if that means i gotta do some extra tail busting fo it then so be it. so if anyone out there has a good tip feel free to let me know, thanx!

There was a pretty good population of wild hogs in PA game lands 97. Rumor had it a tractor trailer load of russian hogs escaped and took up residence there. I havent heard anything lately about the situation as I dont reside in PA anymore but I would imagine they are still there. They were causing problems with the local farmers and destructive to the forest and there was no closed season or bag limits.
