Chamber does stir the pot! I don't lap rings. I use a single base to reduce the need for the lapping procedure.

Slim, The most time I've put into lapping a set of rings was with a 1 piece base.......don't kid yourself !!!

I've also seen them that takes very little time if any at all with a 2 piece base.

I usually mount the bottom half of the bases then rest the scope on them to check and see if there is any mis-alignment. If there is none, would you still lap?

Misaligned rings can't always be seen by the eye !!!
I always lap them and have never found them not to need at least a little clean up.

Just as a side note when using the Leupold standard bases that have the windage screws. I keep a cheap scope on hand that I've centered the cross-hairs in. I use this scope to get everything centered up and tightened down with the aid of a boresighter then lap the rings.

Lap the bases? Lap the rings? Ya mean if I lap my Redfield two piece bas and rings I can get this hunting rifle down to 1" spread at 200 yards instead of 1 5/8" spread?

Mechanic [master marine/industrial diesel]. Yup...Had three sets of tools. SAE, Metric and Wentworth. I flat don't believe in "one size fits all". I only had one set of "adjustable spanners" and they were metric.

Then you should understand that the end results may not mean a better outcome, only that the job was done correctly.

I lost all respect for Leupold windage scope bases after my experience with a rifle I bought that had them. You can't remount a scope and keep its zero. I have no understanding as to why anyone would need windage adjustment in the scope mount. In my situation, even though I was using a torque wrench, I start to get my POI shifting left and right. Turns out the screw head was about to break off. Thumbs DOWN!

Hey Stovepipe, Nice bit of gear mate, and in an excellent caliber too! Like Slimjin & Vince i also use Allen head screw for everything where ever practical. Even in the past on all my bikes, especially the Trumps & Harley, as i can't tell you how many times i lost my number plate off the H.D. And yes, Loctite is also used sparingly & kept in my tool box. In an emergency, a bit of enamel paint also works well as a thread sealer!

Cheers erny.
