Can anyone tell me why they needed to make a .325 Mag when they had the 300 and 338 already?

Was it just to have something new?

I agree, I think it was to fill a hole that was not there.

Good numbers from 180 to 220 grain bullets and if nothing else it gave us an excuse to put another rifle in the gun rack. So I guess it's a big deer to what cartridge? Confused Would you use it on brown bear that was steaming mad?

Give me a few minutes and I will try to dig a hole for it to fit in....may take a while. Very Happy

That's easy, they made it so they could sell more rifles..

Very few things can be accomplished with any of the new cartridges that couldnt be done with some of the older ones..

just my opinion

Well as you know the population that hunts is getting older .. Not as many young getting in as when we were young .. Most of us don't run out and buy the latest new caliber that overnite obsoletes all the competition ..
Trying to sell to the younger market I suppose .. And those who read a write up by a sage who tells how great this latest new offering is .. and believe it ..
Sorry but there is nothing in the wsm or wssm's that I find interesting ..
Jack

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
Yep, it'll happen every time. The hot 45/70 loads are enough for this old man's shoulder so I'll let you have the Lott. The Ruger is a beautiful weapon though. Enjoy Pop.

Some of the WSM series have proven themselves to have merit, IMO. The 270 WSM and the 300 WSM will probably be the survivors judging by sales of dies and rifles at our shop.

The pre-hype actually can be traced back several years when gun writers began to "question" the need for the belt on magnum cartridges; it's my suspicion they knew what was in the pipe for the future and wanted to be on the cutting edge. At some point reality has reared its head and brought home the added cost of components for reloaders (shell holders, loading blocks, etc) and the added cost of ammunition. Sales are in a slump and Remington has all but abandoned the RSAUM. The entire Ultra Mag series may follow into oblivion.

Those the spend time in the field simply haven't bought into the perceived advantages of either the new rifles or cartridges. Kudos to the consumer.

i think this cartridge should be pretty handy actually. It will offer abit more down range energy than the 300wsm for shots at longer ranges on large species of sheep etc although the .300 works pretty well i am sure some people may have a valid reason for wanting abit of extra punch down range.............those Marco Polo are fairly stuff!

And at the last minute I gave in to further temptation and bought a Marlin Cowboy 45-70 26" octogonal barrel instead of the #1.

And of course there are so many folks hunting them. Or not. Very Happy

I think the idea of a new cartridges is alway good. I'm not sure if they are good for the manufacures or not, but they spark interest either for or against. I remember when I was in high school one of my school mate bought a 300 winchester magnum. We were all impressed, Most of us guys either used shotguns with slugs or had an old 30-30, 32 special or a "Krag". True some guys had 30-06s but most if not all were their dads guns. I for one always thought what would you need that for. I would predict that many of my old shcool mates would have a 300 winmag by now.

I think the real story is many hunters can't or don't hunt very much. ( they don't shoot very much either ) They depend on the 5 day hunt. Where in seasons past they shot at and missed big game. They walked around with scoped rifles and got tired of carrying them. So the idea of a lighter weight, large caliber rifle that gives then a seemingly unlimited range rifle is a welcome idea. At least that is the idea the marketing department wants them to think. And lets not forget pride. In camp with your buddies you want to be able to bring back a big one. And if you can't you will at least have something new to talk about.

Heck I have two such guns, my 25-06 and my 338-06. For everything I have ever hunted a 30-30 would have been fine a 30-06 would have done yeomans service as well. I like the 25-06 but learned a bigger bullet would have advantages someday. I found the more I shoot the better I get and the ability to hit targets at varing distances increases proportionally to the amount of trigger time I put in. So the whole idea of the fast bullet and flat trajectory "need" kind of goes out the window. So being one of the lucky ones I don't feel I want such a gun. My standard length action may be heavier that it needs to be. Any accuracy advantage the "short actions" yield are dismissed by the conditions of the hunt. Cold hands, wind blowing and the excitment of the moment all tend to deminish the half minute of angle repeatability we all look for at the range. We wish we could attain.
