I just bot a new Remington 11-87 3" chamber with the (I cant remember the buzz word) "ligher barrel". It has the three standard rem chokes.

So, my question is can I shoot the Remington heavy shot thru the standard chokes or do I need to get a special choke?

Howdy. I am not 100% sure but i think you would need a choke tube designed for heavy shot (being it is not lead). It never hurts to be safe and one that was designed for heavy shot should give you a better pattern.

Thanks Joe. I tried to acess the Remington web site, but is is down right now. I think they (Remington) recommend the turkey choke when using heavy shot, but I need to see if it would harm a regular choke. By the way, the barrel on my new 11-87 is called "light contour". Remington has shaved off some of the barrell mass to lighten up the gun. It is lighter but the comprimise may be al heaver recoil. But, I never feel a recoil when I shoot at game.

Will Hevi-Shot damage my Remington shotgun?

From Remington’s own website:

When used in modern Remington shotguns, in good working condition, Remington Hevi-Shot will not cause choke wear in low volume usage such as Turkey Hunting. However, cosmetic rub marks will occur. Remington’s guns with fixed full chokes will show similar results.

Remington Hevi-Shot ammunition utilizes our super-tough, high density polyethylene shot container that minimizes contact between Hevi-Shot pellets and the barrel and choke. In addition, the pellets are cushioned at the bottom of the shot container to allow them to flow through the choke more easily.

For waterfowl hunters, where the shell usage is generally much higher, Remington recommends using chokes recommended for steel shot pellets. That is – skeet, IC, modified and full – “lead or steel”.
