Gidday phill21, welcome to HuntingNut mate. Grab a beer, pull up a stump and sit awhile.

I'm over in Brisbane mate and load .243 as well. My Weatherby Vanguard shoots very well using ADI AR2208 and Remington 80gn PSP bullets.

I think you will find that the powder that Winchester use in their factory loads is a blended powder to achieve the pressure and velocity that they want.

There are a number of us here who load .243 so you will have no problems finding info on loading this great cartridge. What rifle do you use and what is your intended game mate?

Protocol....well, its pretty simple.....don't be afraid to ask a question and likewise to answer one. You will find this Forum to be a very friendly place with a lot of guys who have a wealth of knowledge and experience and who are more than happy to pass it on to assist others.

Cheers, Vince

Hi Vince, I use 243 Weatherby Vanguard synthetic.
Shoot mostly skippies but pigs fall every now and then as rabbits and fox's
243 on rabbits tends make paddock pizza of them but i dont eat many anyway.
The Weatherby shoots well using ADI 2208 Sierra ssp 80gr.

Thanks for the reply have been reading this forum for some time before i posted anything.
cheers phil

Bushy... I wondered the same thing... skippies?

Anyway... Welcome phil21 Howdy

Vince is correct about Winchester (and other ammunition companies) using gun powder that's not available to the public. I would recommend using a good reloading manual. You will find many tested loads listed for the 243. Just remember to start out on the low end of the load and work up, as every rifle is different.

Never be afraid to ask questions.. Smile

+2 for Varget Smile

Welcome to the Forum.

In my .243 rifles, IMR4350 has proven to be the best powder to date. Take care...

Ahh sorry!
guys they got the name Skippies from Tv series Skippy the bush Kangaroo back in the 70's.

Varget is the equivalent of our ADI 2208.
Yep Vince was kind enough to lend me a stump to park my rump and nice cold tinny

phil

Gidday CH.....Varget and ADI AR2208 are the same powder.

Australian Defence Industries....bought out by Thales a few months back...produce a range of powders for handloaders, some of which Hogdon picked and market under their own names...hence AR2208 and Varget being the same powder. A couple of years back I posted a list of powders that Hogdon carry that are made by ADI/Thales.

Haven't shot a .243 in years, but I used to have very good luck with IMR 4064. If you live in an area of temperature swings, I would investigate some of the more temperature-stable powders on the market (Hodgdon "Extreme" line, Ramshot and etc.). 4064 has a tendency to fluctuate as much as 150 fps between hot and cold weather.
