EB,

You better start them hail Maries. It's going to take a few days to get them all done.

Vint,

I agree with you. It is a matter of preference. If you don't feel safe with a loaded weapon, then unload that sucker. It's a free country (so far), so the rest of us have to right to do as we choose. You also have to option to not hunt with someone that carries a loaded weapon, just as we have the right not to hunt with someone who don't feel safe carrying one that's loaded.

I think its time to move on to another subject. We've worn this one out.

Darn, I sound like a grouchy old man! Ha Ha!

Y'all have a great day!

Cary

Hunting with a hot chamber is the only way to go, using common sence and remembering safety.

As far as carrying a 1911 cocked and locked (hammer back, safety on), I know of cops that won't do that. Too dangerous possibly causing an accidental discharge. They carry them at the 1/2 cock position.

While on duty, I carry a DAO Beretta 96-D Centurion. If it fires it's because I want it to. No possible way it can go off without actually pulling the trigger. Which, BTW, I haven't had to and hope I never have to.

1/2 cocked !!!!! Another 1911 issue that baffles me Confused

This info comes from my Kimber owners manual :

The safety stop [1/2 cocked] is not a manual safety! Do not under any circumstances use the safety stop as a "half cock" position. This misuse can result in damage to the sear, and/or unintentional discharge of the pistol. The safety stop position is an automatically engaging safety feature and should never be engaged by hand!

When I carry a Browning HP it is cocked and locked in a holster that has a thumb snap retaining strap that goes between the hammer and slide.

Thunder Ranch and Gunsite tactical training academies join other top authorities in recommending cocked and locked 1911 status when carrying. It is the safest way to carry the ole slabside and put it into action quickly. Many variants of cocked and locked are employed when by untrained shooters, thusly, we see some carrying their 1911 with an empty chamber under the illusion they can get it into action quickly if needed. Baloney!

Whether carrying open or concealed, getting your first shot to center mass in under one second shows training and practice. Anything less is, well, less. Much less. I am amazed how many buy a firearm and believe the main part of self defense is related to its purchase. Buying even the most expensive piano carries no guarantee of being able to play proficiently. Or, even of playing a tune recognizable by the human ear.

Too, SIGs are intended to be carried hot chamber but have no external safety. They rely on a heavy DA pull of 12lbs and they are intended for intelligent and practiced users. The most important safety on any handgun or firearm is, afterall, between one's ears.

Spaced interval practice and dry fire practice are essential to those that would carry for self defense, open or concealed. Gunsite recommends 100 dry fires per week. After about 3,000 repetitions, trained muscle memory becomes a subconscious thing. Regretably, few that carry actually practice on a weekly basis and are often among those that seek a technological cure for their lack of skill, such as night sights and lasers. Trained and practiced handgunners seldom have handguns so adorned, IMO&E.

Hitting center mass in one second or less transcends conscious action into subconscious reaction. It becomes instinctive. Take all that cash one would spend for frilly accessories, buy a good carry system (belt and holster) and spend the balance of the money on ammo and we may be getting somewhere.

Rob Latham, Jerry Micilik (sp) and others prepared for major competition by firing thousands (thousands!) of rounds prior to the event. They show us how fast and how good we also can become if we practice, both live fire and dry fire. But, it ain't gonna happen if we go off half cocked or cold chamber. In fact, a half cocked 1911 or a cold chamber defensive handgun give me chills and a touch of nausea. Stop it!!

"cold chamber defensive handgun" Is way beyond the original argument's scope, unless you are referring to a wheel gun with the hammer resting on an empty chamber....

on something like my SW-686, you could leave the hammer on loaded chamber, there is a blocking bar to positively block the hammer (firing pin is attached to hammer) from ever descending on the primer unless the trigger is pulled.

Yes - Defensive firearms usages - is beyond the scope of the topic.
But since the topic is "painful" Very Happy Very Happy maybe someone should kiss it better..

Even my summer carry (Firestar 9mm X 19) is designed to be carried "cocked and locked" chamber loaded. I know of no late or modern double action revolver that can not have all six chambers loaded. The only firearms of later design that must have the hammer DOWN on an empty chamber is early single actions like Colt SAA. Even then when battle is eminant the sixth chamber is loaded and the SAA revolver's hammer was placed on the first knotch safety (which, by the way, really isn't a good safety and can be over ridden by the trigger). By The Way...There is a trick that many of the old timers used to load all six chambers and that was to place the hammer between cartridges. This locked the system and placed the firing pin between two rounds until you pulled the hammer to full cock. This was done only for town use or carry. On horse back it [the hammer] was on an empty chamber.

I only use my long colt when I am on the range and I do put it between cylinders and get along fine. I usually am on the range alone or with my best friend who is , like me extremely safetly conscious. Dr. Colt stays in his office until it is time to go to work and the hammer only comes down on a full chamber when fired! When firing is done he goes back to his office(holster) to await clean up.

On horse back you KEEP "Mr Colt" (SAA) on an empty chamber or you stand a chance of shooting yourself in the leg or your horse. Either way you will be walking or walking with a limp...

I will buy that Bushy and if I were to carry my long colt I would probably want it on an empty chamber. Actually I would prefer to carry a 1911!!! Smile My wheel gun has to be cocked for every shot and I would opt for more loads and speed in a have to situation!!!

The now deleted member that started the cold chamber issue did make a reference to never haveing a hot chamber, even for CCW !!!!!!

I tried finding the post but they have been deleted...........

If the staff here thinks this thread should be split and/or anyone wants it to continue on, thats fine with me !!!
