Just got back from two days of shootin pds on my sisters place. Had a friend from another site meet me out there (he drove 1100 miles one way to shoot) and we shot all day Tues. and part of yesterday. Despite the wind I managed 350 or so rounds and a whole bunch of dead dogs. He's still out there doing his civic duty to eliminate all he can. There is just something about a late spring prairie dog shoot that just gets me all wound up. Sure does wonders for your long range shooting skills too.

It is so nice of you two to take time from a busy schedule at work, not to mention the gas money and ammo cost, just to help your sister out like that. The Wave
Best,
Ed

I haven't hunted PDogs since they instituted a season on them here... it was a lot of fun back when we used to hunt them though!

A season on vermin, sounds like crows. Black vermin, I try to wear em out when in season. Very Happy
Best,
Ed

Prairie dogs here in CO have at times been protected on public lands and at least now there is a season on the eastern half of the state. I shoot them at my sisiters place on private land and basically I can year round.

It is still a whole lot of fun. Whats not to like about biodegradable, self erecting, multi-distant, reactive targets and high speed small caliber bullets.

Vince,
Don't you guys have enough problems with rats? I don't think you really want to add PDs to the mix.

Vince,

Just got Kangoroo shooting or rabbit shooting with a rifle which would be about the same, small furry animals. Laughing

Well...I'll throw my hat into the ring here. First off, There is NO season here...they are vermin and the farmers love us.
Ok...here we go,
Sunday June 8th saw a friend of mine plus myself head out to a local farm here in Alberta...there was to be 5 of us but three guys bailed at the last minute. My bud and I shot from 9am til about 5:15 and bagged between 700 and 800 P-dogs total. Very Happy My .22 semi was sooo dirty from residue, it would jam every second shot. I had to put it away and break out the .204 which worried me as it was fairly breezy. Once I got that figured out I was exploding them at 175 yrds regularly.

Thennn....Saturday June 14th, we returned to the same farm...same field...only this time the others showed up so there was 5 of us. First trigger pull was at about 9:30 and we shot til it started raining at 4ish....Agreed upon numbers put it at about 1800 to 2000 kills in a 6 1/2 hr time span between 5 guys. IT WAS INSANE!!!
We'd set up 30 yrds from a town and they would just be everywhere. We'd wipe out as many as we could til the rest got smart then we'd move on a 100 or 150 yrds to another town...same thing again, and again and again...
One of the lads brought his 500 nitro express as a joke...and he actually shot one with a 600 grain bullet. No messy explosion, but definately dead.

Vince...anytime you can get to western Canada in June or July...do so, and I'll guide your hunt. You'll shoot so many you'll puke. Very Happy

Vince I hope this is not a stupid question, but do you really shoot Kangaroos?
Is that allowed?
I sure hope we don't get any of them over here.

Have a look at this thread WildHorse:

Roo Hunting

Roo shooting is a regular past time in the country regions, although you do need a license and tags for everyone you shoot. Once you have the license you simply purchase as many tags as you feel you will need, usually about 50c each, then off you go chasin' roos.

50 cents per roo, humm should go down there and hunt some, I could hunt over 70 of them as compared to the cost of a single deer tag here. Laughing

Vince,

We have an over-supply of Jack Rabbits, every so often, and we go out and thin them out. We normally drive around the ranch at night and shoot until they are hard to find. This normally takes about 3 or 4 nights. The first night we'll kill about 150, the next night about 100, and so on. If we don't do that, they will destroy acres and acres of crops. I planted about 100 acres of peas and found about 5 acres a night disappearing. We have to do something.

The same thing with wild hogs.

I'm assuming that Kangaroos do the same kind of damage to crops.

Cary

I looked

If they are starving or diseased because of numbers, it sholdn't take a college idiot to know that the numbers must be controlled. Let the dumb asses at PETA feed them/.
