D,

The owner of the shop I bought it from named the previous owner to my BIL, who he knew. The gun was placed on the rack due to the former owners recently filed divorce papers (at least that was the story around town). I went to the shop to look at the gun because I heard it was there.

Does anyone know if the extractor can be repaired or replaced? It spins in the bolt recess and when it's in the proper position it works fine. It seems like it might have been pinned or soldered in position at one point, but I'm not sure.

Remington extractors are alot like a internal snap ring, just compress them abit to fit into the hole and they pop back to normal size to lock into the grove.

Replacement extractor can be found here:

D,

Internal snap ring is a perfect description for it. That's what I originally thought, just pop it out and snap in a new one. Then I compared it to my .308 The .308 seems to have something holding it in place, other than tension. I may be wrong on that though.

Joe,

Your 308Win may be a older model and actually have a "rivet" to hold it in place. Remington got rid of the rivet though. Smile

Thanks D!

The .308 is several years older. So old it still fires with slight tension on the trigger and moving the safety to the "fire" position. I need to send it back to rectify that situation.

It did what ?? E-Gun Parts never has done anything to my web browser, unless you click on the schematic then it uses a pop up. Smile

I didn't get a pop-up, it was the only window left open.
I've never had that happen before.

Hey experts, I have a problem and its not a new one with this model. I just bought a new Rem. 700 SPS in 7mm rem. mag. and right from the get go it has chambering problems. I reload and when I loaded some once shot brass, (full length resized) I could not close the action, at all! This bras came from my other 700. So I thought maybe the action was tempermental to other once fired brass so I bought some factory to acuire my brass from. It chambered OK but when trying to extract it was a real chore to open the action. THe brass didn't get stuck in the chamber it was just very hard to open the action. I had the same problem with several other 700 I own. I lapped the lugs and found that it was in dyer need of lapping but I'm still having the extraction problems. The head of the brass is grinding into the bolt fact too, before even firing the round.
Thanks,
Gobbuster

may sound strange but loosen the bolts/screws whatever holding the action to the stock, then tighten back up to the correct torque for them, to me it sounds you may have a little bind issue going on as well as few other things..

Actually it doesn't sound strange at all. I was actually planning to bed the action along with floating the barrel. These areas can produce some problems along with inadequatly guaged chamber properties. I did a little more lapping yesterday and have resolved the issue while keeping a close eye on the go, no go specs. and everything points to the head space being too tight. I am rather disapointed in Remingtons factory specs.. As I stated previously, this is not the first 700 action I've had this same issue with, just the most extreme case of head space being too tight and off. I also had this problem with a new 710. One good point is that all of my Remington rifles produce one hole groups consistently. None of them were good grouping rifles prior to lapping, bedding, and floating the barrels. I also like the Savage 110s and 111s because they produce some really good groups with some minor work to the actions, stocks, and bedding. Hey thanks for the advice and keep on pulling the trigger! Michael

Back to Triggers......

Never, here, felt the want/need to swap out an as issued Rem trigger.

Those savvy with adjustment can easily get 'em down to 2 pounds and zero creep, which IMHO, is the sweetspot.

Those not savvy in Rem trigger adjustment can easily pay a smith to tweak it.....easily much less cost than a replacement trigger.

That said from someone who relies heavily on a good trigger..............

I bought Reminton 710 in 7 mag. that came with a factory installed 3 stage jewel, sweet! It has afforded me the opportunity to adjust to my desired weight with zero creep. Miky like! If you happen to find a 710 buy it. Without a good trigger grouping is nearly impossible to achieve. All of my rifles have been tweeked by me to get the bench rest shooting as good as it gets. I get so much more out of the sport by being the one to make the adjustments that make the difference.
