Has anyone had any luck loading down the 264 to around a 260 or a 6.5x55 ballistics? I was thinking about buying a new rifle in a 6.5x55 but I have a win mdl 70 in 264that I thought I might try first.

Any thoughts?

Just Curious but why do you want to down load it ?. I had a 264 for a few years and the hotter I loaded it the better it shot.

Looking at the Speer #14 manual I see some .264 Win Mag loads that are in the ballpark with the .260 Rem top loads.

Yep, that's the way my .264 win. mag. is too. The hotter=the better. Only loads I have seen that duplicate the .260 are in the column marked "starting loads". I would also assume from the way the .264 win. mag. acts that these type loads would not be accurate at all. My cousins .264 win. mag. is the same way.

In the Speer #13 there are reduced loads listed using IMR4198.
With their 120 grain Spitzer SP they list 21 - 23 grains for velocities under 2000 fps
With their 140 grain Grand Slam and Spitzer SP they list 23 - 25 grains for velocities under 1900 fps
The only footnote is to use the CCI magnum primer.

The older Hodgdon #25 manual lists H4895 for bullets up to 100 grains.
This powder is considered an excellent powder choice for light loads as it maintains its accuracy to 60% of maximum charges. With a 100 grain bullet you could load it down to 31 grains with a maximum load of 53.
That should give you the ability to get just about any velocity you want.
