Been reload for some time.......it's the only way to go if you like to shoot.
I remember at some point......it's an age thing maybe, that there were general "guide lines" for how to tweak your powder charge depending on shape of the fired group, i.e. if it was strung out vertically then reduce/increase charge? Any words of wisdom on this?

Welcome to the site squirrelbait.

IMO pure horizonal or vertical groups tend to indicate a barrel bedding problem. I had a .270 that had horrible horizonal strings. I removed the barrel from the stock and ground down the pressure point Remington puts on their M700's, reassembled and took it out to shoot. I was rewarded with 1MOA groups. After a shot the barrel would come to rest at different points along the horizonal pressure point... removing that allowed for the barrel to return to its natural point.

I havent noticed personally, strings associated with a specific powder amount... groups either open up or remain tight I've found. Perhaps someone here might have some different advice though.

Howdy. Dallan probably hit the nail on the head Bonk But it could also be not letting the barrel cool enough Shooting i have seen hot barrels string groups as well. Good luck !!

I heard that it could be the primer, that causes the strings.

Nope...Absolutely a Blackshoe Snipe. Main propusion Diesel...Destroyer, submarine, submarine tender, harbor tug, Hydrofoil, torpedo test firing ships, small boats and a mine sweeper. One non-diesel ship in there too. An ammunition ship (steam). Crossed anchors, crossed cannons. from a distance (and I was) they look the same to me...

Ha, ho, ha, ha
Just saw the post yesterday, but point well made, I think,,,, now what was that you were saying..... um zzzzzz. Oh, oh, yeh, awake again, Chief cook and bottle washer refers to being a leader of men, ah, well, actually women. I own a couple of companies, we employ all women, so I am boss to a gaggle of females. They think I am a wonderful human being, hum, me thinks it is near Christmas and near time for their bonus?

I wore the crossed cannons for a few years, 40 years ago. At the time, I was a young sargent/chief surveyor in the 101st. Recondo school in 67, then spent most of my time as an FO and in the woods playing with the indians. I will be 60 in a few months.
